A new partnership between the RTC and Communauto for integrated mobility

Quebec, October 10, 2019 – In a press conference on October 10th, the Réseau de transport de la Capitale (RTC) and Communauto, a pioneer in America as the manager of the oldest and one of the largest carsharing services, announced a new partnership. Reserved spaces in certain Parc-O-Bus (POB), the location of stations and free-floating cars in real time, the reservation within the real-time RTC Nomade application and the creation of an “integrated package” will be gradually rolled out until spring 2020 for the benefit of customers. This is an important milestone in integrated mobility.

M. Rémy Normand, President of Réseau de transport de la Capitale (RTC) and M. Benoit Robert, President and founder of Communauto

Integrated mobility will allow everyone to choose their mode of transport adapted to the sector where they are, the conditions of the moment and the type of travel, all on the same digital platform. This partnership with Communauto is therefore significant for urban mobility, be it for the supply of services, infrastructure, pricing and customer information.

“Since it was founded in 1994, Communauto aims to offer alternative modes of transportation and the RTC has been working with this organization since 2004. Its vision is directly aligned with the RTC’s vision of offering a selection of mobility solutions. In fact, in its Strategic Plan 2018-2027, the RTC clearly identifies Communauto as a key player and we are very proud to have taken this step, which truly marks the first stage in the development of integrated mobility in Quebec City.” – Rémy Normand, President of the Réseau de transport de la Capitale.

“Today’s announcement marks a new milestone for multimodal mobility. In particular, the “integrated package” is a unique initiative, among the first in the world. We are delighted that this project is born thanks to the involvement of the RTC. For carsharing to have all its benefits, it must be paired with a well-established public transportation offer. Moreover, it becomes more relevant when modes of transport such as carsharing are added in, hence the importance of this initiative.” – Benoît Robert, president and founder of Communauto.

Details of the new partnership

From now on, parking spaces will be reserved for these shared vehicles in eight (8) local and regional POBs. This is one more step towards integrated mobility, an objective precisely defined in the RTC’s Strategic Plan 2018-2027.

Starting this fall, the first component of the partnership will focus on two identified parking spaces for Communauto carsharing vehicles in five local and one regional POB. These are the POB’s 41e Rue / 1re Avenue, Carrefour Les Saules, Jardin zoologique, Promenades Beauport, Pie-XII (corner Quatre-Bourgeois) and Le Gendre. Then, upon their opening, future POB’s Bastien and Sainte-Anne will also include these two spaces.

The main point of the agreement is the integration of Communauto’s data into the real-time RTC Nomade app, the mobile application of the RTC which notably allows the viewing of real-time schedules and the creation of itineraries. Starting this fall, the user will be able to locate Communauto stations as well as free-floating vehicles (FLEX cars) on the map of the mobile app. Booking will also be possible from the application’s interface in the winter of 2020.

To support this new partnership, the RTC will offer an “integrated package” that will include a monthly general RTC ticket for a given month and 10 FLEX Communauto trips of 30 minutes or less. It will be available in the spring of 2020, at a cost of $99.

Finally, Communauto improves the DUO Auto + Bus by adding the free late return. The DUO Auto + Bus already allows members to have the RTC L’abonne BUS and the subscription to an advantageous Communauto carsharing plan. In order to facilitate certain trips for members, the free late return will allow them to keep the car at night at no additional cost (11 p.m. to 7 a.m.).

About the RTC

The Réseau de transport de la Capitale (RTC) transports more than 155,000 different people each month in the Greater Quebec City area. It operates a fleet of nearly 600 buses, several of which are hybrid and air-conditioned, which run on 134 routes and serve more than 4,500 stops, including 20 temperate stations. It employs more than 1,600 people in its two operation centres and offers real-time schedules on all its routes thanks to the range of real-time RTC Nomade tools. Transportation tickets meeting all needs are available in nearly 170 outlets throughout the agglomeration of Quebec City.

Transit and Communauto FLEX launch new partnership in Toronto

Download Transit to find, reserve, and unlock point-to-point carshare vehicles with Communauto FLEX

Toronto, ON – Transit, the leading app for getting around Toronto without your own car, and Communauto FLEX, Toronto’s point-to-point carshare service, announce a new partnership today that makes it easier than ever for Torontonians to get from a-to-b without using their own cars.

Starting today, users of Transit, available for free in the App Store and Google Play, can see the nearest Communauto FLEX vehicles available — then reserve, unlock, and complete their trips, all from within Transit’s app using their Communauto FLEX account.

Users simply tap a Communauto FLEX pin on the map showing the nearest vehicle, reserve the car with a single tap, walk to the vehicle, and tap in Transit to unlock the car. Once the trip is complete, users can end their trip by tapping a final time in Transit.

To celebrate this new addition, Transit users who sign up for Communauto FLEX for the first time receive $20 in driving credit using a special promotional code.

Connecting Torontonians with Communauto FLEX is a natural next step for Transit. The app already integrates realtime information for the TTC, GO Transit, and all major transit operators in the Greater Toronto Area. It’s also completely integrated with Bike Share Toronto. Since 2016, Transit users have purchased passes and unlocked bikes with Bike Share Toronto more than a million times. Today, 40 percent of Bike Share Toronto trips are unlocked with Transit. Transit is also integrated with Uber, allowing users to hail and pay for a ride to the nearest transit connection within the app. Transit has also recently added a feature that allows users in Ontario to purchase transit tickets within the app, starting with the St. Catharines Transit Commission.

With Communauto FLEX, Transit users now have a complete mix of transportation options in Toronto available in a single app, including public transit, bikeshare, ridehail, and carshare. By combining transportation options, Transit makes it easy for Torontonians to get around without their own car.

“We’re proud to announce Communauto FLEX as a partner in Toronto,” said Jake Sion, Chief Operating Officer of Transit. “By making it easier to access carshare in the app that hundreds of thousands of Torontonians use every week, we’re expanding the reach of pointtopoint carshare and reducing the need for people to own their own cars.”

“Communauto’s mission is to provide an affordable and practical alternative to car ownership in combination with transit, biking, walking and other alternative transportation,” said Marco Viviani, Vice President of Strategic Development at Commuanuto. “Technology has a big role in making this possible and this partnership with Transit allows us to make the multimodal experience we want to provide more and more seamless.”

Saint-Laurent, June 7, 2019 – On June 7, on Saint-Laurent territory, Communauto will be launching its Communauto FLEX self-serve car service, previously known as Auto-mobile. This new service will help improve the sustainable mobility opportunities available to residents, workers and visitors to Saint-Laurent.

“We are very pleased to welcome this new service, which will diversify accessible means of transportation for our community. Users will now be able to get around more quickly in Saint-Laurent and easily access other Montréal boroughs. Our collaboration with Communauto, which began in 2005 through its reservation-based rental service, is in line with Saint-Laurent’s policy to promote active, ecological and sustainable modes of transportation. These are alternatives to single-occupancy vehicle use, just like the BIXI bikes recently rolled out in Saint-Laurent. The implementation of these vehicles is also in keeping with the guidelines of our Plan local de déplacements (local transportation plan) adopted in 2017 and our status as a sustainable municipal territory,” mentioned Saint-Laurent Mayor Alan DeSousa.

“Communauto’s mission is to develop a transportation service that is as widespread as possible and complementary to public and active transportation. By bringing Communauto FLEX to a large community such as Saint-Laurent, we are taking a decisive step towards offering city-wide services,” stated Marco Viviani, Communauto’s Vice-President, Strategic Development.

Saint-Laurent territory, Communauto FLEX vehicles will be allowed to park only
in the two SRRR (on-street parking reserved for residents) zones, namely:

The SRRR in Vieux-Saint-Laurent, bounded by boulevard Marcel-Laurin
and boulevard Côte-Vertu, avenue Sainte-Croix and rue Saint-LouisThe SRRR at Montpellier commuter train station, bounded by
boulevard de la Côte-Vertu, avenue Sainte-Croix, rue Tassé and rue Muir

The Borough will monitor this service over time, in order to ensure balanced parking in these two zones.

What is Communauto FLEX?

It
is a self-serve car service without reservation, which provides access to
hybrid or electric vehicles available without delay, 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week. Its users take a car to any destination they choose and drop it off
anywhere they want within the service area. Rental can be arranged for a few

1 in 5 Torontonians would consider replacing their vehicle with a carsharing service!

Toronto’s first free-floating carsharing service, Communauto FLEX, reaches 30 000 usages in first three months.

TORONTO, March 5, 2019 – Toronto’s appetite for alternative mobility is growing. A new report from Communauto, Canada’s longest-running carsharing company and the new free-floating carsharing service in Toronto, found that 1 in 5 Torontonians (20 per cent) would consider getting rid of their household vehicle and using a carsharing service as a replacement. Of that 20 per cent, Millennials were most likely to make the switch, with 1 in 4 (25 per cent) claiming they would reconsider household vehicles for the right carsharing alternative; 16 per cent of Gen Xers and 15 per cent of Baby Boomers said the same.

“Currently, 87 per cent of Torontonians own a vehicle. As technology evolves and Toronto becomes a smarter and more mobility-driven city, it’s clear that there’s a desire for new ways of moving around”, said Marco Viviani, Communauto Vice President. “Carsharing complements transit and active transportation to provide affordable, flexible and eco-friendly mobility, reducing congestion and pollution. That’s why we’re thrilled to be working with the City of Toronto as the first participants in its new carsharing pilot project. This report confirms what we observed on the field, the rapid adoption of the service by Torontonians that led us to enlarge the service area after just 3 months.”

The report went on to find that 12 per cent of Toronto’s drivers have tried carsharing, and that nearly half of the city’s population (49 per cent) are open to using such a service. Of the demographics surveyed, Millennials were most receptive, with 67 per cent open to the idea of trying a free-floating carsharing service. They were also the demographic most familiar with carsharing—22 per cent of 18-34-year-olds said they’ve used a carsharing service in the past, compared to 10 per cent of Gen Xers and just 4 per cent of Baby Boomers.

“Communauto has been an excellent resource for my fiancé and I,” said Andrew, a 24-year-old resident of downtown Toronto. “Living in the city is expensive, and owning a car is a big, expensive responsibility. Between summer cycling and public transit, we find ourselves only requiring a vehicle occasionally, for transporting purchases and getting out of the city. Communauto fills these needs perfectly. One way trips are convenient, and daily rates are reasonable for weekend trips. Also, the cars are all well equipped, and drive smoothly. It’s an easy, low hassle alternative to owning or renting.”

In just three months the results are impressive: more than 30,000 trips by more than 2,000 users. The average trip is 20 km and more than three hours in duration, with 5 per cent of weekend trips lasting more than 24 hours. Some of the most popular long-distance destinations are Muskoka and Prince Edward County and the most popular carsharing neighbourhoods are Parkdale, Little Italy, Riverdale, and Little India. Customers use the service to complete tasks like groceries, business meetings, shopping at IKEA, visiting friends, and going out of the city.

Free-Floating Zone
Communauto FLEX launched in Toronto with 200 Hyundai Accent hatchbacks in November 2018, servicing an area of close to 50 square kilometres in the downtown core. The free-floating parking zone spans to High Park and Runnymede in the west, Dupont and Mortimer in the north, and Victoria Park in the east.

How it works
Communauto FLEX offers Torontonians 24/7 access to one-way carsharing and a simple way to improve their mobility inside and outside the city. Registered users can locate and reserve cars using the Communauto FLEX mobile app, and doors can be unlocked and locked using a smartphone.

Communauto FLEX has no monthly fees and is free to join, using a pay-as-you-go structure. Daily trips begin at $0.41/minute, $15/hour, $50 the first day, and $35 for any extra days, fuel price included. The first 150 km is included in the price of each trip, and for a limited time, registered users will receive the first 30 minutes of each trip free. Torontonians can book Communauto FLEX cars, which are parked in residential on-street parking spaces within the 50 kilometre square service area, and drive anywhere they want to go in between, dropping the car off in any legal parking space at the end of the trip. Metered parking spaces and Green P lots are for the moment excluded from the service area.

Communauto also wishes to develop the Ahuntsic and Saint-Laurent boroughs.

Close to 500 stations
