Careem is now six years old… and we’ve come a long way

This month marks the sixth anniversary of the founding of Careem, from a service created in Dubai largely for corporate clients to a multi-vehicle platform operating in over 100 cities in 14 countries the growth has been signicant. We launched with a mission to simplify and improve the lives of people, and to build an awesome organisation that inspires – and six years into that mission it’s worth looking at how much we’ve accomplished.

And here are some of the stats from our first six years…

And we’re not finished yet. In fact, our mission to simplify and improve lives and create an awesome organisation that inspires is one that had no end point. We go on, and we’re delighted to have you with us.

Careem and Abaad partner to support El Dar Programme

As an organisation whose mission is to simplify and improve the lives of people, Careem decided 2018 was going to be the year we paid extra close attention to what we were doing for women in our region.

This is why on international women’s day this year, we pledged to bring onboard 20,000 female Captains by 2020. We also launched our internal women@Careem network – a internal program created for and by our female colleagues to network and engage with each other, but most importantly, to raise awareness of and promote an inclusive culture for men and women to learn from each other.

Staying true to this, last Christmas, we ran a “HOHOHO” promocode campaign which enabled users to collect five percent of their rides using the HOHOHO promocode. After one month, the top users with the most donations, were allowed to pick the NGO all proceeds would be donated to. The winning NGO was ABAAD – a non-profit organisation founded in June 2011 which fought for violence against women.

Careem Engineer & Data Scientist Stories

Peter Minev, Managing Director Berlin

Careem is a unique place where people are bound by a strong sense of an inspiring mission, and a compelling vision. It’s a fast growing environment where super talented engineers get an opportunity to challenge themselves and learn more.

Olga Syrova, Member of Technical Staff, Berlin

I am a back end engineer, and I chose to be with Careem because I support their mission. Careem is a place where engineers are inspired. We spend our time reflecting on technologies and existing solutions, exchanging points of view, and elaborating the pros and cons in order to get the best of the architecture and processes we use. That’s a typical day at Careem. Your experience and your vision are highly valued here. With people coming from more than 50 different countries, Careem managed to create a very powerful platform where we can create effective and scalable solutions, and change people’s lives for the better.

Careem creates between 60,000 and 70,000 jobs per month… have you…

This is the NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium in Kyiv. Last May it hosted the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool. Now imagine this stadium full of people… that is how many people are starting to work for Careem each month.

Here at Careem we are creating between 60,000 and 70,000 jobs per month, so despite being seen largely as a ride-hailing company, the biggest impact Careem has is not moving people, but rather, giving people jobs.

Having launched in Dubai in 2012, Careem has rapidly expanded to have a presence in 14 countries and 100 cities across the wider MENA region in just under six years. In that time, we have created over 850,000 job opportunities for Captains, and our presence is having a positive socio-economic impact in the markets in which we operate.

With more than 24 million customers we can generate steady incomes for the Captains who work with Careem. There were a lot of people in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt who were not employed, or were under-emplo..

We’ve helped over 3,000 Captains in Pakistan become car owners……

Captains are the lifeblood of Careem. When we started Careem just over six years ago we did so with only 25 Captains in Dubai – soon we will have a million Captains in over 100 cities in 14 countries.

Careem relies on its Captains, but those Captains need to have a car, so in some of the markets where people want to work for us but can’t afford a car we help them. Pakistan is one such market.

A person may not have been credit-worthy before, but with the income that we are able offer them we can guarantee to a lender that they are credit worthy, and that the future Captains will be earning an income. We also work with government initiatives to help people become employed.

In Pakistan we also work with the FleetCo department. The FleetCo department was setup to ensure multiple streams to generate quality supply for Careem.

In the past year, the FleetCo team has established three partnerships with financial institutions – JS Bank, Telenor Bank and UBL.

The JS and UBL partnerships are..

Careem’s co-founder Mudassir Sheikha speaking at RISE in Hong Kong

RISE is the largest tech conference in Asia and brings speakers from the world’s biggest companies, most exciting startups, media and investors to their annual meeting in Hong Kong. Over 14,000 people from 90 countries gathered this month and Careem’s co-founder Mudassir Sheikha was one of the key speakers.

Mudassir spoke about the biggest mistake he’s made; the importance of hiring people who are super ambitious; why Careem doesn’t have employees and the two things that startups in the Middle East really struggle with.

Key people from Careem are regularly being asked to speak at events, such is the interest in what we are doing. Last month Junaid Iqbal, Managing Director of Careem Pakistan, gave a TEDx talk on the philosophy on knowing that you know nothing.
