Cadillac Introduces Enhanced Super Cruise Driver Assistance Technology on CT5 Luxury Sedan in China

2022-08-05

SHANGHAI – Cadillac has introduced the enhanced Super Cruise driver assistance technology in China on the CT5 luxury sedan, providing a more intelligent driving experience with extra convenience and comfort. The CT5 Platinum Super Cruise variant is priced at RMB 360,700.

The enhanced Super Cruise system has expanded capabilities that include lane change on demand and automatic lane changing. It also provides a more intuitive user interface and refined driving dynamics. It is available for use on over 320,000 km of expressways and nearly all urban elevated roads connected to expressways in China.

Super Cruise is the world’s first intelligent driving assistance technology to use a centimeter-level LiDAR map in addition to real-time cameras and sensors. The innovative driver-attention system helps ensure the driver is always focused on driving when Super Cruise is in operation.

With improved hardware and more advanced software algorithms, the enhanced Super Cruise system’s lane change on demand feature allows the system to change lanes on compatible highways when requested by the driver.

When Super Cruise is engaged, the driver can either tap or fully latch the turn signal to indicate that they would like to change lanes. The system will then look for an acceptable opening in the indicated lane, while also taking time to let other vehicles know that a lane change is imminent. If the system determines that the indicated lane is open, the CT5 will merge into the lane.

With the new automatic lane changing feature, the system can determine when a lane change is optimal and initiate the maneuver while following signaling protocols. It will only be enabled when certain conditions are met, such as lane convergence or overtaking a slowing vehicle in front.

Throughout the process of both scenarios, the driver attention system requires the driver to remain focused on the surrounding environment during the lane change.

With the upgraded driver attention system, the enhanced Super Cruise system can better identify the direction of the driver’s vision and keep them engaged or signal when they need to pay more attention to the surrounding roads. The high-performance camera and infrared sensors support detection at night or when the driver is wearing sunglasses.

Cadillac initially introduced Super Cruise on its CT6 flagship sedan in China in 2018. It later expanded the feature to two additional variants of the model. To ensure Super Cruise’s safe and efficient operation in China, engineers conducted extensive and multifaceted local validation, as well as testing and evaluation of the technology, together with the technology’s authorized local mapping partner.

Thanks to the VIP electrical architecture, the Super Cruise technology can be further updated over-the-air.

The CT5 is one of Cadillac’s most popular models in China. Since its launch in 2019, more than 140,000 have been sold in the domestic market. In July, CT5 deliveries rose 82% on an annual basis, with mid- and high-end variants accounting for over 90% of demand.
