ACI: the second-hand market in September in the red in double figures, a new strong setback for radiation

10.10.2022

Double-digit decline in September for the second-hand vehicle market. The transfer of ownership of cars net of mini-transfers (temporary transfers in the name of the dealer pending resale to the end customer) recorded a decrease of 14% compared to September 2021. Almost the same result also for the net transfers of motorcycles, which reported a negative monthly variation of 12.3%.

However, the second-hand market continues to perform significantly better than the new one: for every 100 new cars, in fact, 233 second-hand cars were sold in September (205 in the first nine months of the year).

As for fuel supplies, traditional diesel and petrol engines continue to prevail even in September in the sale and purchase of used cars, while the share of petrol-fueled hybrids stands at 3.1%. In the mini-passages, on the other hand, diesel cars stand out unchallenged (52.1% share in September 2022, albeit down compared to September 2021, when it was 55.3%), with an incidence of gasoline hybrid cars growing monthly 4.7%.

The many uncertainties that weigh on the future of the car therefore also have a heavy impact on the second-hand market, which in the first three quarters of 2022 compared to the same period of 2021 shows overall decreases of 11.6% for net transfers of ownership. cars, 6.8% for motorcycles and 9.7% for all vehicles.

The data are reported in the latest monthly bulletin “Auto-Trend”, the statistical analysis carried out by the Automobile Club of Italy on the PRA data, available on the website www.aci.it.

Another strong setback in September for radiation, which in the four-wheel sector recorded a decrease of 31.2% compared to the same month of 2021 (lower number for the month of September if we exclude the 1996, prior to the issue of scrapping incentives). The unit replacement rate was equal to 0.86 in September (86 of every 100 new cars were canceled) and 0.82 in the first nine months of 2022. Monthly contraction also for the radiation of motorcycles which ended the month in September down by 5.5%.

Overall, in the period January-September 2022 compared to the same months of 2021, the radiations filed decreases of 30.4% for cars, 3.2% for motorcycles and 27.9% for all vehicles.
