ACI: 2021 road accidents in 107 Italian provinces

Soft mobility: 2,101 accidents and 9 deaths scooters; bicycles 15,771 accidents and 207 deaths; electric bicycles 691 accidents and 13 deaths; pedestrians 16,180 accidents and 471 deaths

In 2021, 151,875 accidents with injuries to people were recorded on Italian roads, which caused 2,875 deaths and 204,728 injuries. On average, respectively, 416 accidents, 7.9 deaths and 561 injuries each day.

The provincial statistics, drawn up by ACI and Istat to complete what was already processed in July, show a situation of gradual return to normal following the relaxation of the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. In 40 provinces (out of 107) the number of deaths compared to 2019 – the year chosen as a reference for the 2030 goal – has increased and in 7 it has remained stable.

Oristano (+ 140%: 12 deaths in 2021, 5 in 2019), Savona (+ 67%: 20 deaths in 2021, 12 in 2019) and Biella (+ 63%: 13 deaths in 2021, 8 in 2019) the provinces with the largest percentage increases. Sassari, Oristano and South Sardinia lead Sardinia to be the region with the highest increase in deaths compared to 2019 (+20).

Conversely, Aosta recorded -75% (1 died in 2021, 4 in 2019) Trieste -73% (4 deaths in 2021, 15 in 2019) and Massa Carrara -71% (4 deaths in 2021, 14 in 2019).

Four regions in which there was an appreciable decrease in deaths: Aosta Valley (-75%), Molise (-46%), Trentino Alto Adige (-31%), Emilia-Romagna (-20%).

Turin (-30 deaths), Padua (-23), Verona (-23), Bolzano (-22), Forlì-Cesena and Milan (-19) were the provinces where the most lives were spared. Udine (+16 deaths), Latina (+15) and Perugia (+10) the provinces with the greatest increases. In Calabria, which recorded an overall decline of 18%, all the provinces have a negative sign: Catanzaro -35%, Cosenza -3%, Crotone -38%, Reggio Calabria -12%, Vibo Valentia -33%.

Mortality index

In 16 provinces the mortality rate – deaths per 100 accidents – was more than double the national average value (equal to 1.89): Isernia (5.9), South Sardinia (4.8), Udine (4 , 7), L’Aquila (4.6) and Chieti (4.5) the most critical situations. Aosta, Trieste, Massa Carrara, Genoa, Milan, Rimini, Lucca, Livorno, Ascoli Piceno vice versa, are the provinces where accidents are less serious. The mortality rate, in fact, is less than 1 death for every 100 accidents.

Gentle mobility

In the course of 2021 471 pedestrians died, 220 cyclists – of which 13 on electric bikes – and 9 scooter drivers plus one dead pedestrian hit by a scooter. In the province of Rome the highest number of dead pedestrians (50), followed by Milan (20), Naples (18) and Turin (15). In the province of Milan the highest number of dead cyclists (10), followed by Padua and Pavia (8), Ravenna and Forlì-Cesena (7). Of the 9 deaths on scooters, 4 are concentrated in the province of Rome which thus totals 44% of the deaths nationwide.
