NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Representatives from more than 30 nonprofit organizations gathered at Nissan’s Americas headquarters for the inaugural Nissan Foundation Symposium. The event celebrated the Foundation’s 30th anniversary and featured a day of discussions relevant to the foundation’s mission of building community by valuing cultural diversity.
“The impact that the Nissan Foundation has had in local communities during the last 30 years is because of our strong partnerships with nonprofit organizations,” said Chandra Vasser, Nissan Foundation President, vice president and chief DEI officer, Nissan Americas. “The symposium is the culmination of the Foundation’s milestone anniversary celebration and an opportunity to reaffirm Nissan’s deep commitment to fostering cultural understanding that leads to acceptance and appreciation of our differences.”
The Nissan Foundation was created in 1992 as a direct response to the civil unrest that followed the Rodney King trial verdict that occurred near Nissan North America’s then U.S. sales operations in Southern California. In each of the 30 years since, the Nissan Foundation has awarded grants to nonprofits supporting the foundation’s mission to build community by valuing cultural diversity. To date, the Nissan Foundation has awarded approximately $14 million to more than 150 nonprofit organizations.
“The Foundation has a singular focus area – to support organizations that provide education and offer diverse cultural perspectives, experiences and voices to communities across the country,” said Vasser. “Grantees include non-profit museums, public television stations and organizations that promote dialogue in communities among people of different cultures, ethnicities and religions.”
