BIL works together with the authorities and several other industry organizations to inform about responsibility and safety when handling and selling used high-energy batteries. The aim is to avoid dangerous situations and serious incidents.
-Increased attention and increased expertise on how used electric car batteries should be handled is very important. As the world leader in the share of electric cars, Norway should also take the lead in safe handling of used batteries, says Tore Lillemork, technical director of the Bilimportørenes Landsforening (BIL).
The Directorate for Community Safety and Preparedness is now joining forces with the National Association of Car Transporters, Batteriretur, Autoretur and the Norwegian Automobile Industry Association on a campaign to put the topic on the agenda.
-The sale of used high-energy batteries takes place in both the industrial and private markets without a clear safety check. There is also a lack of knowledge about personal safety and personal responsibility, says Lillemork
Lillemork is concerned that everyone who processes high-energy batteries from electric and hybrid cars does so in a safe and responsible manner. Reuse and recycling of such used batteries is important for a sustainable circular economy. The goal is for everyone who comes into close contact with high-energy batteries to escape dangerous situations and avoid serious incidents.
Especially when it comes to batteries that have been in accidents, this can be of decisive importance.
– There is a growing market for used electric car batteries. Basically, it is safe to reuse a used electric car battery. They are not dangerous as long as they are controlled and the condition is checked by qualified personnel. But used electric car batteries (high-energy batteries or lithium-ion batteries) that have been in a collision-damaged car can pose a danger. When reusing electric car batteries, it is important that you handle it properly and within the applicable laws and regulations. It is important that batteries are checked for condition by qualified personnel with the right skills, he says.
