100 TECHNICAL, POLITICAL, LEGAL, ECONOMIC RECOMMENDATIONS TO FACILITATE STRATEGIC DECISIONS IN THE FIELD OF MOBILITY AND CONNECTED AND AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES
Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV) are now an integral part of our mobility. In fact, many cars integrate various automation functions (e.g. assisted driving and lane keeping system) and already operate at level 3 automation. But are governments, public authorities and users fully aware and informed about CAVs? And what will be the effects of a fully automated vehicle fleet on the way we travel and organize society?
The project answered these questions PAsCAL*, developing the “Guide2Autonomy”: over 100 technical, policy, legal and economic recommendations to facilitate strategic decisions regarding connected and autonomous vehicles, on mobility issues at international, national and local levels.
The G2A will allow to:
develop and improve public strategies, policies and regulatory framework related to the implementation of autonomous vehicles and connected systems;
understand and guide user acceptance in the design of new CAV services and infrastructures;
integrate user-specific factors into new CAV ICT software developments: Human Machine Interface (HMI) levels, communication security, privacy, trust and data sharing;
create new CAV management and business models in line with the interest of the local economy and the general public: better management of CAV development models, including more general public management models for strengthening the local economy and the identification of future financing solutions.
As CAV innovation will be rapid, the G2A recommendation set and toolbox will be flexible to allow for adaptation as well as integration with new tools (e.g. guides, recommendations, methodologies, new design techniques) in the CAV field.
*PAsCAL – acronym for “Enhance driver behavior and Public Acceptance of Connected and Autonomous vehicLes” – is a European project aimed at developing a multidimensional map of acceptance by part of the public of the upper levels of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV), highlighting any critical issues in the matter, in particular investigating the new needs of the “driver” considering different modes and transport services. The objective of PAsCAL is, in fact, to create a “Guide2Autonomy” (G2A), a set of guidelines and recommendations to accelerate the user-friendly evolution of connected automated transport systems and vehicles – Flyer (https:// www.aci.it/fileadmin/documenti/ACI/Iniziative_e_progetti/PAsCAL_Flyer_2020_bis.pdf)
