- Annual report showcases Honda’s commitment to environmental policies and practices across products, manufacturing and facilities in Europe
- 2022 sees completion of ambitious automobile electrification strategy; three further electrified models to be introduced in 2023
- Investment into renewable energy and the use of more sustainable materials at multiple facilities across Europe
Honda Motor Europe has published its European Environmental Report 2022, an annual summary of the company’s environmental initiatives across the region for the fiscal year from April 1st 2021 to March 31st 2022.
The publication of the European Environmental Report 2022 illustrates Honda’s commitment to environmental policies and practices, and covers automobiles, motorcycles, power products and parts, as well as initiatives being carried out at Honda factories, sales offices, logistics centres, regional R&D offices and dealerships.
The report also includes an overview of Honda’s global environmental results, which have been taken from the wider Honda Sustainability Report 2022. These results showcase Honda’s continued efforts to significantly reduce its emissions levels and improve recycling processes and renewable energy development beyond Europe.
Most notably, 2022 marked the completion of Honda’s ambitious goal to electrify its entire mainstream automobile model line-up for Europe. The latest models to benefit from Honda’s award-winning e:HEV powertrain include the 11th generation hybrid-only Civic, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022, as well as the all-new Honda HR-V e:HEV.
The company also revealed three new electrified models for the European market in 2023 that will increase its offering in the fast-growing SUV sector. New additions to the competitive compact-SUV segment will be the all-electric e:Ny1 and the hybrid-only ZR-V. Meanwhile, the all-new CR-V will be available with both full hybrid e:HEV and plug-in hybrid e:PHEV powertrain options for the first time in Europe.
Within the report, Honda outlines how it remains committed to addressing climate change as a top priority across its facilities. The company has significantly reduced its CO2 emissions and energy usage across its European operations, through investment in more sustainable materials and renewable energy at multiple facilities across Europe.
“Honda continues to place its European business firmly at the forefront of the company’s global electrification ambitions,” says Katsuhisa Okuda, Managing Operating Officer of Honda Motor and President of Honda Motor Europe. “Over the past year, Honda has expanded the breadth of its proven electric and hybrid powertrain technologies in Europe, paving the way for a new range of battery electric and hybrid models that will form part of Honda’s widest European line up for many years. Looking forward, this will help us work towards our core business objectives while simultaneously serving our ambitious goals for sustainability in Europe.”
Other reported key developments during FY2022 in Honda’s journey towards a comprehensive electrification and renewable energy programme for its business in Europe include:
- A new partnership with V2X Suisse Consortium that marked a significant milestone in the development of Honda’s energy management business. The pioneering project, which started in late 2021 and will run until the end of 2023, is designed to demonstrate the vital role of EVs and bi-directional charging technology in the future of energy management.
- Details of Honda’s next generation eGX battery-powered unit, designed for commercial power equipment products. The eGX offers the same level of performance as the standard petrol GX motor, but with low noise and vibration levels, making it perfect for environments where limiting the impact of construction noise is an important factor, such as indoors or near residential areas. The quick charging lithium battery enables an 80% charge in one hour to maximise performance time and reliability.
- Information on the Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium and Honda’s strategy to drive the standardisation of swapable batteries and replacement systems to pave the way for the increased adoption of electric motorcycles.
- An update on Honda Italia Industriale S.p.A’s on-site solar panels project, which will be completed in July 2023. The system will be responsible for the generation of 1.2MW of renewable energy and capable of powering 21% of the site’s energy needs.
- Information on Honda’s investment in thermal recovery of post combustion fumes, through an energy efficiency intervention which consists of utilising a heat exchanger to recover thermal waste from exhaust fumes during the painting process.
- A case study on Honda’s strategic partnership with Storm, Belgium’s leading onshore wind farm manufacturer, and the renovated roof and energy saving lighting installation at Honda’s warehouse in Gent, Belgium.
