IG Metall welcomes the agreement reached by the European Council and the European Parliament on the reorganization of emissions trading in the European Union. The pressures of energy-intensive industry are challenging but bearable. It is now crucial that CBAM works as a new carbon leakage tool and protects sustainable industrial production in Europe. “A compromise between the competitiveness of industry and the requirements of climate protection has thus been achieved,” said Wolfgang Lemb, executive board member of IG Metall. From a German point of view, the design of the CCfD funding guideline, which Federal Minister of Economics Habeck announced for January, is of particular importance in this context. The objective must be to maintain sustainable, climate-friendly and internationally competitive raw material production in Germany as the basis for resilient value chains in Germany and Europe. “In my view, the establishment of the climate social fund, which is intended to promote investments in urgently needed energy efficiency measures, is of particular importance. It is now important to ensure that the fund is implemented quickly in a separate regulation,” explained Lemb.
