Finally! The longest winter break the Bundesliga has ever taken is coming to an end. These are strange times: Strictly speaking, the winner of the first half of the season, who is usually referred to as the “autumn champion”, has not yet been determined. Often enough in recent years, Bayern have had such a big lead over the second in the table after fourteen or fifteen rounds that the two final games of the first half of the series were no longer needed to decide them. But this is also different this year. Bayern are ahead again, but only with four points. In purely mathematical terms, SC Freiburg still has a chance of becoming the “autumn champion” with some delay.
And what’s next after that? Can Christian Streich’s boys keep their place in the Champions League? Will the “Iron” from Berlin continue to sail ahead of clubs that are far better funded in the table? Will the Ruhrpott clubs on the relegation zone get the curve again – and instead pull VfB Stuttgart and Hertha from Berlin into the abyss?
