We can’t wait any longer. There is a need for European legislation to regulate access to data produced by vehicles

“European legislation is urgently needed to regulate access to data produced by vehicles. Enough with the continuous shifting of deadlines: we can’t wait any longer!”

This is what ten European Associations* (ADPA, AIRC, CECRA, CLEPA, EGEA, ETRMA, FIA – of which the Automobile Club of Italy – FIGIEFA, INSURANCE EUROPE and LEASEUROPE), representing the main operators in the automotive sector.

The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) campaign “My Car, My Data” (“My car, my data”) – the reasons for which are supported and relaunched by the letter to von der Leyen and the EU College of Commissioners – aims to represent the urgent need to ratify fundamental principles for the protection of consumers such as freedom of choice, data protection and security, fair competition and innovation.

In this regard, it is essential to remember that vehicle data does not only include operational data (speed, location, maintenance, mileage, oil levels…) but also data relating to driver behaviour, such as driving style or distances travelled, and even details personal data, such as name, contact details and financial data shared with the vehicle’s operating system.

Back in December 2020, the European Commission had undertaken to define a legislative proposal by December 2021. To date, however, that commitment is still not fulfilled.

Furthermore, this year the legislative proposal has been postponed again, leaving the after market sector in a limbo which heavily influences decisions and prevents companies from investing.

Assogomma, Adira, Aica, Ania, Aniasa and Federpneus – national associations** which represent numerous Italian companies operating in the after market – join the request of the aforementioned European associations and ask the Italian institutional representatives to intervene on the Commission so that the rapid times not only for the definition of a legislative proposal, but also for its adoption within the parliamentary deadlines, scheduled for May 2024.
