ACI: January positive for the second-hand market, but the cancellations of cars show a new decline

Positive start to the year for the second-hand market in Italy. Transfers of ownership of four-wheelers net of mini-transfers (temporary transfers in the name of the dealer awaiting resale to the end customer) in January increased by 10.7% compared to the same month in 2022. A significant result which however it is reduced to a more modest 5.4% in terms of daily average, due to the presence in January 2023 of an extra working day. For every 100 new cars in January, 192 second-hand cars were sold.
As regards the choice of fuel sources, the predominance of traditional diesel and petrol cars was confirmed on the second-hand market also in the first month of 2023, but the progressive growth of petrol hybrids is accentuated, which almost doubling their quota have reached a share of 5.2%. There was also a sharp increase in the sale and purchase of bi-fuel petrol/LPG cars (+74% compared to January 2022) which in January are in third place with a market share of 7.1%. The only decrease recorded regards electric cars (-15.7%), which close the monthly ranking with a market share of 0.4%.
Lastly, looking at mini-transfers, the supremacy of diesel cars is contrasted by the excellent monthly performances recorded by petrol hybrid cars (5.9% share in January with an overall increase of 90.7%) and by those with petrol/LPG fuel ( share in January of 7.3% with an overall increase of more than 100%).
Moderately positive balance sheet in January for transfers of ownership of motorcycles, which net of mini-transfers recorded an increase of 5.1% compared to January 2022, which drops to 0.1% in terms of daily average due to the aforementioned extra working day.
The data is reported in the latest monthly bulletin “Auto-Trend”, the statistical analysis carried out by the Automobile Club of Italy on the PRA data, which can be consulted on the website www.aci.it.
In January, cancellations of cars still suffered severely: with a replacement rate of 0.68 (68 were canceled for every 100 new cars) in January, cancellations in the four-wheel sector accounted for a drop in 15% compared to the same month of 2022 (-19.1% in terms of daily variation). On the other hand, the cancellations of motorcycles increased, closing the first month of the year with an increase of 10.4% compared to January 2022 (+5.1% the daily average)
