ACI: braking in February for the second-hand market new setback for the radiation of cars

The second-hand vehicle market slowed down in February, closing the monthly balance sheet with a minus sign. Transfers of car ownership net of mini-transfers (temporary transfers in the name of the dealer awaiting resale to the end customer) limited losses by recording a decrease of 0.7% compared to February 2022. The worst result for net transfers of motorcycles, which archived a negative monthly variation of 11.9%.
However, second-hand cars continue to gain more support than the new market: for every 100 new cars in February, 180 used ones were sold (186 in the first two months of the year).
Consumers’ preferences for second-hand cars, for the umpteenth time, rewarded the more traditional fuel systems (diesel and petrol) in February, while the share of hybrid petrol cars dropped to 4.3% (it was 5.2% last January) and that of electricity still remains at 0.4%. On the contrary, the share of second-hand petrol/LPG cars is growing again (+63.8% and an incidence on the total of 7.3%), as is that of diesel hybrids which, however, still do not exceed the 1% (+72.9% and an incidence of 0.7%).
In the mini-volumes, diesel cars are still on the shields (53% share in February 2023, a slight decrease compared to the same month of 2022, when it was 53.2%). The incidence of petrol hybrid fuels instead rises to 5.7% in February, with an overall increase of 44.4%, however exceeded by that of petrol/LPG bifuel which stands at 7.4%. Also noteworthy in minipasses is the monthly leap in diesel hybrid cars (+90.9%), which in February surpassed the 1% target (1.1%) albeit slightly.
In the first two months of 2023 compared to the same period of 2022, net ownership transfers show increases of 4.7% for passenger cars and 3.4% for all vehicles, against a decrease of 4.8% for motorcycles.
The data is reported in the latest monthly bulletin “Auto-Trend”, the statistical analysis carried out by the Automobile Club of Italy on the PRA data, which can be consulted on the website www.aci.it.
Another strong setback in February for radiation, which in the four-wheel sector recorded a decrease of 14% compared to the same month of 2022 (the lowest number ever for the month of February if we exclude the 1996, prior to the issue of scrapping incentives). The unit replacement rate was 0.65 in February (65 were deregistered for every 100 new cars) and 0.66 in the first two months of 2023. On the other hand, the deregistration of motorcycles which closed the month of February, accounting for a positive change of 4.8% compared to February 2022.
Overall, from January to February 2023, compared to the same months of 2022, radiation recorded decreases of 14.5% for cars and 12.3% for all vehicles, compared to an increase of 7.4% for motorcycles.
