Climate change and trade: IG Metall for “New Deal” against burdens

Frankfurt am Main – In view of the discussions about heat pumps and gas heating, IG Metall is calling for more commitment to the energy transition. Ralf Kutzner, executive board member of IG Metall: “A lack of understanding in politics and companies undermines acceptance of the climate goals in society. If politicians decide on binding climate protection measures, they must also ensure that everyone can also support these measures financially. That’s why we need a ‘New Deal’ for the skilled trades and the people.

With a view to the building energy law planned by the traffic light coalition, the union is calling for a “regulatory framework from a single source that encompasses the entire building”. This included adequate government funding with social criteria. Ralf Kutzner: “In 2022, the building sector failed to meet the climate targets for the third time in a row. At the same time, the employees in the trades feel the frustration of the people. It must not continue like this.”

Specifically, the Federal Crafts Conference of IG Metall demands:

Holistic building approach: For the necessary greenhouse gas reductions, the renovation rate of the existing properties must be doubled with regard to facades, roofs, windows, doors and renewable energies as well as electrics.
Socially just thermal walls: The energy transition must not exacerbate the tense financial situation of tenants and owners of family houses, especially since older people in particular cannot afford loan-financed renovations. The federal funding for efficient buildings (BEG) must cushion this.
Promoting good work: In the case of state subsidies, the commissioning of companies bound by collective bargaining agreements must become mandatory in order to counteract the growing shortage of skilled workers of 190,000 employees with an incentive for skilled workers. “Dumping in terms of working conditions is poison for everyone. Collective agreements are key to the success of the energy transition,” said Ralf Kutzner.

The companies called on IG Metall to make their contribution to the future of the trade. “The negative image of craftsmanship is often homemade. We need more co-determination, more and better training and a right to further training,” demanded IG Metall board member Ralf Kutzner.
