ACI: the second-hand market grew in March but radiation recorded yet another drop (-7.7%)
06.04.2023
Plus sign in March for the Italian second-hand market. Transfers of ownership of cars net of mini-transfers (temporary transfers in the name of the dealer pending resale to the end customer) accounted for an increase of 8.5% compared to March 2022. For every 100 new cars, there were sold 166 second hand in March and 178 in the first quarter of the year. The second-hand market therefore gradually gives way to that of the new one, which has grown sharply since last January, after the remarkable results recorded in 2022.
As far as engines are concerned, in March on the used market it was once again traditional fuels (diesel and petrol) that held the top positions, but petrol hybrid cars, which confirmed their first place on the new market with a monthly share of 34.2%, registering an increase of 42.2% conquering a share of 4.7%. Worth noting is the significant increase in methane-powered cars (+91.2%) against a heavy decline in electric propulsion (-30.9%), still at 0.5% of the share. In the minivans, diesel cars are confirmed at the top of the ranking (53.5% share in March 2023, up compared to March 2022, when it was 52.6%), while the incidence of petrol hybrids reaches 5 .9% and that of LPG fuels 7.1%. Cars that clearly still have a market both from dealers and private individuals.
Positive monthly balance also for the changes of ownership of motorcycles which, net of mini-transfers, recorded an increase of 10.1% in March compared to the same month in 2022.
In the first three months of 2023 compared to the same period of 2022, net transfers of ownership archived increases of 6.1% for cars, 1.4% for motorcycles and 5.3% for all vehicles.
The data is reported in the latest monthly bulletin “Auto-Trend”, the statistical analysis carried out by the Automobile Club of Italy on the PRA data, which can be consulted on the website www.aci.it.
A sore point, also for the month of March, is the constant slowdown in deregistration procedures in the car sector, which corresponds to yet another growth in the Italian vehicle fleet. The cancellations of the four wheels showed a decrease of 7.7% compared to March 2022, with 92,170 practices (lowest number in the last 20 years for the month of March, if we exclude March 2020). The monthly unit replacement rate therefore stands at 0.54 (54 were deregistered for every 100 new cars), settling overall at 0.62 in the first quarter of the year. On the contrary, the cancellations of motorcycles are positive, boasting an increase of 3.7% in March compared to the same month of 2022.
From January to March 2023, compared to the same period in 2022, radiation recorded decreases of 12.2% for passenger cars and 10.4% for all vehicles, with an increase of 6.1% only for motorcycles.
