Collective bargaining agreement: Employees in garages and car dealerships make more money

Frankfurt am Main/Leinfelden-Echterdingen – The employees in car workshops and car dealerships have won a pilot agreement with warning strikes: On the night of Saturday, the IG Metall and employers in the car trade in Baden-Württemberg agreed on more money for employees covered by collective agreements .

According to this, the remuneration for employees will increase by 5 percent from November 2023 and by a further 3.6 percent from October 2024. In addition, they will receive two payments of an inflation compensation premium totaling EUR 2,500: EUR 1,500 by July 2023 and EUR 1,000 in the first quarter of 2024.

Trainees in garages and car dealerships receive 70 plus 50 euros higher remuneration and inflation compensation premiums totaling 1250 euros. The new collective agreement in Baden-Württemberg is valid for 24 months.

Ralf Kutzner, executive board member of IG Metall, said: “This wage agreement noticeably relieves the employees’ wallets. The automotive trade must become future-proof against the shortage of skilled workers through better working conditions. Employers have now taken the first step in that direction.”

Nationwide, IG Metall had mobilized over 23,000 warning strikers in three weeks. The union thus achieved the highest participation in this industry for years. 435,000 people are employed nationwide in the motor vehicle trade. 91,000 employees benefit from a collective agreement. Kutzner: “Good collective agreements don’t just fall out of the sky, they are fought for in front of the workshop gates. This first deal is a great credit to all warning strikers.”

After this collective bargaining agreement, regional negotiations will continue in the other districts. The aim is to adopt the wage agreement in Baden-Württemberg.
