ACI: plus sign in May for used cars, first positive balance after 21 months of radiation

06/13/2023

Plus sign in May for the used car market. Transfers of ownership of four-wheelers net of mini-transfers (temporary transfers in the name of the dealer pending resale to the end customer) achieved an increase of 8.6% compared to May 2022. For every 100 new cars in the month 168 second-hand cars were sold in May (175 in the first five months of the year). Positive balance also for the mini transfers, which recorded a monthly increase of 13.8%.

Yet another confirmation of the predominance of traditional diesel and petrol fuel systems on second-hand vehicles, with a market share of petrol-driven hybrid cars which, albeit slightly down on last April (from 5.2% to 4.8%), remains stable at 4.8% in the first five months of the year. Second-hand electric cars still remain at a standstill with a share of 0.5%, also reporting a loss of 15.5% on a monthly basis. Diesel fuels are still on the shields in the minivans, despite the drop in their market share (from 53.7% in May 2022 to 52.9% in May 2022). The incidence of petrol hybrids, in the case of minipasses, instead rises this month to 5.9%, exceeded only by that of LPG cars, which stands at 7.2%.

Accounts in the red, on the contrary, for the transfer of ownership of motorcycles, which net of the mini-transfers closed the May financial statements with a decrease of 8.9% compared to the same month of 2022.

In the first five months of 2023 compared to the same period of 2022, net ownership transfers recorded increases of 6% for passenger cars and 4.2% for all vehicles, with a decrease of 2.2% for motorcycles.

The data is reported in the latest monthly bulletin “Auto-Trend”, the statistical analysis carried out by the Automobile Club of Italy on the PRA data, which can be consulted on the website www.aci.it.

First signs of recovery for the radiation sector, which after 21 consecutive months of negative sign in May recorded an increase of 1.4% compared to the same month of 2022, an increase mainly determined by a 7% growth in demolitions . The unit replacement rate is equal to 0.59 (59 were decommissioned for every 100 new cars) and stands at 0.60 in the first five months of 2023.

Positive balance also for radiation from motorcycles, which showed a monthly increase of 8%.

In the period January-May 2023, compared to the same months of 2022, radiation still archived overall decreases of 9.5% for cars and 8.4% for all vehicles, compared to an increase of 4.5% only for the motorcycle sector.
