On a mixed weather weekend at Donington Park on 17th and 18th June, the Praga R1 race car brought home silverware once again with five podium finishes from two races, with the Praga R1 of Rodolfo Gonzalez setting the fastest lap of the weekend.
The BRSCC race weekend saw a grid of almost 20 mixed prototypes compete on the Donington Grand Prix Circuit, with multiple classes including the Sports Prototype Cup Open, Sports Prototype Revolution Trophy and Zeo Prototype Series.
Sports Prototype Cup
In the Sports Prototype Open, Ruben Stanislaus from Idola Motorsport started Race 1 from P2 on the grid and made a storming start. Having built a strong lead on lap one, Stanislaus fended-off the competition to take a clear victory and his first race win, while setting the fastest lap in class, and second fastest overall, in 1min 27.166 seconds.
In Race 2, the arrival of rain on lap three forced teams to pick between wets or slicks. Stanislaus repeated his flying start from Race 1, but it was the turn of Idola Motorsport teammate, Rodolfo Gonzalez, to take top honours. Having started from P14, Gonzalez made the right call to change to wets and then back to slicks before delivering a standout drive to take P1 in class, also setting the fastest lap of the whole weekend, in 1 minute 25.751 seconds. Stanislaus finished closely behind in P2.
Zeo Prototype Series
Meanwhile, the team from University of Wolverhampton Racing (UWR) faced the same grid with a different class to beat.
Teammates Shane Kelly and Jess Hawkins shared the two races between them, with Hawkins taking the wheel of the student-run UWR R1 in the first of the two 30-minute races. Sharing the grid with Radicals, Revolutions and other prototypes, Hawkins finished the race in P2 in class and P4 overall, with a best lap time of 1 min 27.587 seconds.
In Race 2, Shane Kelly, who has a long history of race wins at the Donington circuit, proved once again that this is his track. Starting on P1 in class (P2 on the grid) and facing changing wet and dry conditions on track, Kelly’s confidence earnt him both P1 in class and P1 overall.
