The fleet in circulation in our country is too old and too polluting: as many as 3 million and 700 thousand cars – 9.3% of the total – were registered before 1993. Most of them are Euro 0 which count, by now, at least 30 years of age!

Campania (17.6%), Calabria (15.2%) and Sicily (13.5%), the most “old” regions. Valle D’Aosta (2.3%), Trentino Alto Adige (2.6%, both by virtue of the high percentage of cars registered for rental use) and Veneto (5.8%), the “youngest”.

These are some of the most interesting data that emerge from “Self-portrait 2022”,  the ACI statistical publication, which photographs the vehicle fleet of Regions, Provinces and Municipalities as at 31 December 2022,online on the ACI website.

ONLY 1 CAR OUT OF 7 (13.9%) IS ECOLOGICAL Still too few ecological cars, gpl: 2,900,799, 7.2% of the car fleet; natural gas: 971,583 (2.4%), hybrids: 1,556,620 (3.9%), electric 158,131 (0.4%)], which, overall, represent approximately 13.9% of the total, against 12, 4% in 2021. In percentage values, compared to the total of circulating capital, Marche and Emilia Romagna are the “greenest” regions (respectively, 23.7% and 23%), followed by Valle D’Aosta (20.7%) and from Umbria (17.9%). The least “ecological” regions are Sardinia (4.7%) and Calabria (5.6%). In absolute values, Lombardy is the region with the highest number of ecological cars (800,000). Followed by Emilia Romagna (680 thousand) and Lazio (590 thousand). In the queue Molise (24 thousand) and Basilicata (34 thousand).

ELECTRIC VEHICLES: +49% IN THE LAST YEAR, THEY REPRESENT ONLY 4.3% OF THE CAR PARK Definitely significant, at least in percentage terms (in absolute values, only 4.3% of the fleet), the increase in electricity (electric, petrol hybrid and diesel hybrid): on a national average, the increase between 2021 and 2022 was 49%, with peaks of 158% in Valle D’Aosta and 72% in Trentino (where many rental cars are registered: in these regions, in fact, there are registered offices of important companies in the sector) and 64% in Tuscany.
