ACI: the second-hand market grew in August but radiation is once again slowing down
06.09.2023
Growing market in August for second-hand cars. Transfers of ownership of four-wheelers net of mini-transfers (temporary transfers in the name of the dealer pending resale to the end customer) accounted for an increase of 5.7% compared to August 2022. For every 100 new cars, there were sold 219 used (or more than double the first registrations) in the month of August and 181 in the first eight months of the year.
As far as engines are concerned, even in August on the second-hand market, traditional fuels (diesel and petrol) are at the top of the rankings. Petrol hybrid cars, which hold first place on the new market with a monthly share of 33.5%, however recorded a growth of 54.9%, conquering a market share of 4.5%. On the contrary, the second-hand electric car market did not take off, stagnating at a share of 0.5% in August and even slightly decreasing in the first eight months of the year. On the other hand, in the mini-transfer sector, the leadership of diesel engines is once again confirmed (52.6% share in August, in any case down compared to the same month of 2022, when it was 53.6%), while the incidence of petrol hybrids rise to 6.1%, overtaken by LPG fuels which are firmly established at 7.5%. Cars that clearly still have a market both from dealers and private individuals.
Very slight increase on a monthly level for the transfer of ownership of motorcycles which, not considering the mini-transfers, in August achieved an increase of 0.1% compared to the same month in 2022.
In the first eight months of 2023 compared to the same period of 2022, net ownership transfers recorded increases of 6.6% for cars and 4.6% for all vehicles, compared with a contraction of 2.4% for motorcycles.
The data is reported in the latest monthly bulletin “Auto-Trend”, the statistical analysis carried out by the Automobile Club of Italy on the PRA data, which can be consulted on the website www.aci.it.
Yet another slowdown in the month of August due to radiation in the car sector, with a consequent umpteenth growth in the Italian vehicle fleet. The cancellations of the four wheels closed the monthly balance with a drop of 2.4% compared to August 2022. The unit replacement rate was equal to 0.72 (72 were canceled for every 100 new cars), reaching a total of 0.62 in the first eight months of the year. The cancellations of motorcycles are also negative, showing a monthly decrease of 3.2% in August.
From January to August 2023, compared to the same period in 2022, radiation filed drops of 8.3% for passenger cars and 7.7% for all vehicles, with an increase of 1% for motorcycles only.
