Spotlight on Singapore: Grab x Hyundai, ComfortDelGro x Uber & Volvo x NTU

Hyundai Invests in Grab

And yet, another automaker makes a move into the ride-hailing market. Hyundai has announced that it will invest in Southeast Asian ride-hailing giant, Grab. This investment is part of the $2 billion round lead by SoftBank and DiDi Chuxing last July. The investment was for an undisclosed amount but part of it is to expand the exposure of Hyundai’s electric vehicles such as the IONIQ Electric.

UberFlash to order ComfortDelGro

As of January 19, you will be able to book a taxi through UberFlash. This is the new option available within the Uber app in Singapore since the taxi company bought a majority stake in Uber Singapore. ComfortDelGro taxis will now use dynamic pricing.

Volvo will test self-driving buses in Singapore in collaboration with Nanyang Technical University

Volvo Buses, in partnership with Nanyang Technical University, will be developing and testing self-driving buses in Singapore. It is no surprise that Volvo has chosen Singapore to roll out its first autonomous gig for public transport. The country is known for being forward-looking early technology adopter. Desmond Kuek, SMRT Corp’s CEO said:

“Our goal is to stay future-ready by keeping abreast of latest land transport solutions for safe, efficient and comfortable journeys, and adapt such urban mobility solutions to Singapore’s unique operational setting.”“NTU takes pride in its strong industry connections, and this partnership with Volvo will pave the way for future mobility solutions by developing and testing autonomous buses right here on campus. These solutions will further strengthen Singapore’s vision of embracing autonomous vehicle technologies and enhance public transportation.” NTU President Professor Subra Suresh

An operating system for the future of mobility

Ford is tired of “just being a car company”. Ford wants to be seen as a platform for managing the endless possibilities that autonomous vehicles will bring along.

“Our new platform will make it easy to connect to and work with our partners, who can benefit by accessing our fleet of self-driving vehicles to serve their customers,” Jim Farley, Ford’s executive vice president and president for global markets

Toyota presents: e-Palette

Last week at the CES 2018, Toyota introduced its latest all-electric autonomous vehicle concept. The e-Palette is a self-driving glass box which’s interior can be customised to achieve various commercial purposes, amongst them, ride-sharing. Toyota sees the e-palette as mobile platform to offer opportunities to companies to deliver their services, whether it is a mobile bed, a mobile restaurant, a moving office, etc.

Ofo lands in India

Starting as a pilot program in 7 cities across India, Ofo has now entered the country. The cities where the dockless bikes will be available are Indore, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Delhi, Pune, Coimbatore, and Chennai.

Ford $11 billion investment for EVs

Although currently only 1% of the market is electric, Ford (and all car companies for that matter) is making a huge investment in EVs. Part of the reason is that everyone seems to be betting on an electric, connected and self-driving future. Furthermore, regulators press OEMs to reduce their CO2 emissions. The company has more than doubled their self-set spending target for 2022 from $4.5 billion to $11 billion.
