ACI: slowing down in December used and radiation but they also weigh two working days less

There was a slight slowdown in December for the Italian used car market, also due to the presence of two fewer working days compared to the same month in 2022. With a monthly drop of 0.1% (which however rises to +11% in terms of daily average) the transfers of ownership of four-wheelers net of mini-transfers (temporary transfers in the name of the dealer pending resale to the end customer) closed the 2023 balance sheet with an increase of 6.6%. For every 100 new cars, 193 used ones were sold in December and 184 in the entire year.
Regarding the choice of fuel, traditional diesel and petrol cars still prevail on the used market, but the constant growth of petrol hybrids is accentuated, which in December with a growth of 22.6% reached a market share of 6.1% (overall 5% in 2023, with an annual increase of 53.8%). The sales of bi-fuel petrol/LPG vehicles were stable (incidence of 7.2% in December and 7.3% in the whole of 2023), while the monthly and annual shares of both the both methane and electric cars.
As regards mini-transfers, the primacy of diesel cars is once again confirmed (incidence of 48.6% in December, down compared to 2022, and 51.4% of the annual total), but the positive performances recorded by petrol hybrid cars, which with a share of 8.2% in the month of December (6.8% in the whole of 2023) once again surpass bi-fuel petrol/LPG cars (monthly share of 7.4% and annual share of 7.3%).
Net transfers of ownership of motorcycles were in the red in December, recording a decline of 4.2% compared to the same month in 2022, however highlighting a growth of 6.4% in terms of daily average due to the presence of two working days in less. The 2023 balance sheet for second-hand motorcycles closes with a decline of 0.5%.
The data is reported in the latest monthly bulletin “Auto-Trend”, the statistical analysis carried out by the Automobile Club of Italy on PRA data, which can be consulted on the website www.aci.it.
Even in the case of radiation, the two fewer working days in December had an impact. In the case of car radiation, the negative change of 4.2% compared to December 2022 was matched by an increase of 6.4% in terms of the daily average. However, the balance sheet for 2023 is negative, showing an overall decline of 6.4%. The unit replacement rate was 0.68 in December (68 were removed for every 100 new cars) and 0.62 in the whole of 2023, with a consequent further increase in the fleet in circulation.
Negative balance also for motorcycle radiation, which in December recorded a monthly decrease of 8.6% (+1.6% the daily average), with an overall decrease of 0.1% for the whole of 2023.
