ACI: Euro NCAP takes stock of the activity carried out in 2023

01.24.2024

In the “Year in Numbers” study all the numbers from last year: 18 tests, over 80% of the models achieved the maximum score of five stars, no vehicle had a rating lower than four stars

In terms of safety testing by Euro NCAP, 2023 has seen very important changes: from revisions to the protocols, to the addition of the truck and other heavy duty vehicles (HGV) category, demonstrating Euro NCAP’s constant commitment to ‘Vision Zero’.

There were 18 safety tests (17 involved new car models). Overall, the results achieved with the new criteria were very good: 14 cars achieved 5 stars (82%), 3 4 stars (21%), no vehicle had a lower rating.

Last year it was not possible to award ‘Best in Class’ as fewer results were published in each category.

The models were evaluated using the new protocols that covered “new” situations: possibility of collision avoidance, protection in the event of an accident and post-accident safety. Among the new scenarios evaluated are accidents involving cars and motorbikes, the so-called “dooring”, an accident in which an occupant inadvertently opens the door.

Euro NCAP has also included in the evaluations the tests of the car falling into water, due to the evident climate changes taking place, and the detection of the presence of children on board (CPD). Finally, the Euro Rescue app for first aid has been renewed and improved to guarantee post-accident safety.

“Although the number of ratings was lower in 2023 than in 2022, it was a busy year of innovations,” said Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP Secretary General. We are proud of the new updates to the safety protocol, the projects and the partnerships that have developed thanks to Euro NCAP’s ever-increasing commitment to safety. NCAP24, the global NCAP world congress, which will take place in Munich from 23 to 25 April, will be an important event demonstrating our great commitment to safety”.
