ACI: Euro NCAP, five stars for NIO and Toyota

10.04.2024

Three cars tested in the first test of 2024. Maximum score for NIO EL6 and Toyota C-HR. Four stars for the basic version of the Honda CR-V.

NIO’s EL6 is a vehicle that offers battery-swapping technology to reduce range anxiety. It uses a camera, radar and lidar to detect people around it and to avoid or reduce accidents. The automatic emergency braking (AEB) system performed effectively in collisions with other vehicles and in protecting vulnerable users. It gets an overall rating of five stars.

In the Toyota C-HR, a model now in its second generation and equipped with greater technology and space, the autonomous emergency braking system performed particularly well, obtaining top marks in almost all tests. The driver monitoring system (standard) is indirect and relies on steering inputs and lane position to detect indicators of drowsy driving. It gets an overall rating of five stars.

The Honda CR-V 2.0 Hybrid achieves a rating of 4 stars with the basic equipment and 5 stars if equipped with the optional Honda Sensing 360 package. The car is equipped with a camera and a single radar; the safety package includes corner radars to improve the performance of the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS).

β€œIt is no surprise that these three cars achieved the maximum score, albeit with the optional safety package, in the case of the CR-V,” said Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP General Secretary. It is gratifying to see advanced sensing solutions, such as lidar, implemented to provide better accident prevention. Our post-crash inspection, which has been an essential part of the crash protection assessment since 1997, uncovered weaknesses in all three vehicles, including poor airbag deployment and the “submarine” effect ” of the occupants, that is, when in the event of a collision one tends to slide under the seat belt. Manufacturers should pay more attention not to overlook fundamental aspects in their search for sophisticated solutions.”
