Surprised by new NTP: – Like a bad April Fool’s joke

The government highlights cuts in climate emissions as one of the most important initiatives in the new NTP, but in reality forgets heavy transport, BIL believes.

Figures from Statistics Norway show that more than 80 per cent of all domestic freight transport takes place by road. The underlying figures for NTP show that the demand for freight transport will increase by 13 per cent until 2030.

– At a time when we really need predictability and powerful incentives to increase the pace of the green shift, the new NTP is perceived as lacking and defensive. The so-called “heavy vehicle package” is somewhat reminiscent of a premature April Fool’s joke, says Harald Jachwitz Andersen, director of BIL.

History shows that the right incentives are crucial to speeding up the green shift. Then it will not do to serve a package without good content.

– To believe that one will achieve the same green shift within heavy transport as for passenger cars, without powerful, predictable and unbureaucratic incentive schemes, appears naive. Ambitions and goals must be followed up with the right measures, says Andersen.
