ACI: used vehicles and radiation increased in April but the increase in the number of vehicles in circulation does not stop
06.05.2024
Double-digit growth in April for the second-hand vehicle market. Changes in ownership of cars net of mini-transfers (temporary transfers in the name of the dealer awaiting resale to the end customer) recorded an increase of 19.7% compared to April 2023, which however fell to 7.8% in terms of daily average, due to the presence of two more working days. For every 100 new cars, 191 used ones were sold in April and 184 in the first quarter of the year.
As far as engines are concerned, traditional fuel systems (diesel and petrol) are always at the top of the rankings on the used market. Sales of petrol hybrid cars, however, are constantly growing, with an increase of 53% reaching a market share of 6.6%. On the contrary, the market for second-hand electric cars is at a standstill, stopping at a share of 0.7% in April. In the mini transfer sector, the primacy of diesel is once again confirmed (48.9% share in April, down compared to the 53.4% recorded in the same month of 2023), while the incidence of petrol hybrids is positioned at the ‘8.6%, once again exceeding LPG fuelling, which stood at 7.3%.
Monthly increase also for transfers of ownership of motorcycles which, net of mini-transfers, closed the April balance sheet with an increase of 20% compared to the same month in 2023 (+8% daily average).
In the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period of 2023, net ownership transfers recorded increases of 10.6% for cars, 6.1% for motorcycles and 9.3% for all vehicles.
The data is reported in the latest monthly bulletin “Auto-Trend”, the statistical analysis carried out by the Automobile Club of Italy on PRA data, which can be consulted on the website www.aci.it.
A real leap in April for car radiation, with an increase of 32.6% compared to April 2023 (19.3% in terms of daily average), the latter month which had recorded an absolute minimum for the sector . The unit replacement rate is equal to 0.67 (67 were written off for every 100 new cars) and 0.71 in the first four months of the year. Despite the largely positive result, it should therefore be underlined that the Italian fleet continues to grow progressively.
Finally, radiation from motorcycles was also on positive ground, closing the monthly balance sheet with an increase of 19.5% (7.6% the daily average).
From January to April 2024, compared to the same period in 2023, radiation increased by 26.7% for cars, 14.2% for motorcycles and 25.9% for all vehicles.
