ACI: Used cars continue to grow in June but radiation also increases (+12.3%)

A plus sign also in the month of June for the Italian second-hand car market. Changes in ownership of cars net of mini-transfers (temporary transfers in the name of the dealer awaiting resale to the end customer) have shown an increase of 1.5% compared to June 2023, which rises to 6.6% in terms of daily average due to the presence of one less working day in the month. For every 100 new cars, 157 used cars were sold in June and 181 in the first half of the year. In any case, the used car market is slowing down due to the increase in new registrations, supported by the generous economic incentives that have recently come into force.

Nothing new on the food front. In June on the used market, traditional fuel systems (diesel and petrol) are once again in pole position, while hybrid petrol cars continue to grow, with an increase of 52.3% compared to the same month in 2023, conquering a market share of 7.7%. Sales of electric cars are also increasing (+71.1%), which however still reach a limited share of 0.9% in June. As far as mini-transfers are concerned, diesel cars are still at the top of the rankings (48.1% share, down compared to June 2023, when it was 52.9%). The monthly incidence of petrol hybrid cars stands at 9.4% (+66.7% increase) and that of LPG fueling at 6.6% (a decrease of 10.3%).  Highlighted is the increase in mini-transfers of diesel hybrid cars, which achieved an increase of 78%, with a percentage of the total equal to 2%.

Negative monthly balance for transfers of ownership of motorcycles which, net of mini-transfers, recorded a 2.4% decrease in June compared to the same month of 2023, which however returns to positive territory in terms of daily average due to of the working day less recorded in June 2024 (+2.5%).

In the first half of 2024 compared to the same period of 2023, net ownership transfers recorded increases of 8.9% for cars, 4.6% for motorcycles and 7.7% for all vehicles.

The data is reported in the latest monthly bulletin “Auto-Trend”, the statistical analysis carried out by the Automobile Club of Italy on PRA data, which can be consulted on the website www.aci.it.

Double-digit increase in the month of June for radiation in the car sector (+12.3%, equal in terms of daily average to +17.9%). An increase that is undoubtedly significant but which puts a brake on the growth of the Italian fleet in circulation as the monthly unit replacement rate stands at 0.61 in the month in question (for every 100 new cars 61 were removed) and at 0.69 in first half of the year.

On the contrary, motorcycle radiation decreased, recording a 9.4% drop in June compared to the same month in 2023 (-4.9% in terms of daily average).

From January to June 2024, compared to the same period in 2023, radiation increased by 21.7% for cars, 8.9% for motorcycles and 20.7% for all vehicles.
