ACI: the second-hand market growing in July, strong jump in radiation due to the ECO-BONUS effect

06.08.2024

Growing market in July for second-hand cars. Changes in ownership of four-wheelers net of mini-transfers (temporary transfers in the name of the dealer awaiting resale to the end customer) have resulted in an increase of 16% compared to July 2023. The positive figure, however, scales to + 5.9% in terms of daily average, due to the presence of two more working days in July 2024. For every 100 new cars, 215 used cars were sold in July (more than double the first registrations) and 185 in the first seven months of the year.

As far as engines are concerned, on the used market it is always traditional fuel systems (diesel and petrol) that occupy the top of the ranking. However, petrol hybrid cars showed significant growth of 85.8% in July, gaining a market share of 7.7%. The market for second-hand electric cars, despite the more than doubled quota, still does not reach 1% share. In the mini transfers sector, the primacy of diesel engines is once again confirmed (48.2% share in July, down compared to the same month in 2023, when it was 52.7%), while the incidence of hybrids petrol rises to 9.6%, exceeding that of LPG fuelling, which instead drops to 7%. Finally, there was a sharp increase in the mini-transfers of diesel hybrid cars (+87.8%).

Monthly increase for transfers of ownership of motorcycles which, again net of mini-transfers, recorded a progress of 8.4% in July compared to the same month of 2023, which however fell into negative territory (-1%) in terms of daily average.

In the first seven months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, net ownership transfers recorded increases of 9.9% for cars, 5.2% for motorcycles and 8.7% for all vehicles.

The data is reported in the latest monthly bulletin “Auto-Trend”, the statistical analysis carried out by the Automobile Club of Italy on PRA data, which can be consulted on the website www.aci.it.

There was a real surge in car radiation in July, a result evidently determined by demolitions related to the purchase of new cars encouraged by eco-bonuses. Four-wheel radiation closed the monthly balance sheet with an increase of 49.6% compared to July 2023 (+36.6% the daily average). The unit replacement rate was 0.97 (for every 100 new cars 97 were written off), standing overall at 0.73 in the first seven months of the year. More modest growth, however, for motorcycle radiation, which showed a monthly increase of 2% in July, however equal to a decrease of 6.9% in terms of the daily average.

From January to July 2024, compared to the same period in 2023, radiation recorded increases of 25.7% for cars, 7.7% for motorcycles and 23.9% for all vehicles.
