Rome, 14 October 2024 – In 2023, 166,525 accidents with injuries to people were recorded on Italian roads (165,889 in 2022, +0.4%; 172,183 in 2019, -3.3%), which caused 3,039 deaths ( 3,159 in 2022, -3.8%; 3,173 in 2019, -4.2%) and 224,634 injured (223,475 in 2022, +0.5%; 241,384 in 2019, -6.9%). On average, respectively, 456 accidents, 8.3 deaths and 615 injuries every day.

The provincial statistics – processed by ACI and Istat – show, in 2023, a slight improvement in the number of victims. However, accidents and injuries are increasing, albeit to a limited extent. Compared to 2019 – the year chosen as the reference for the 2030 objective (50% reduction in the number of victims and serious injuries) – 42 provinces out of 107 recorded an increase in number of deaths on the roads. In another 56, however, this number decreased. Finally, in 9 Provinces, the number of deaths remained stable.

The most critical situations are in Nuoro (6.25) and in Southern Sardinia (6.14). Prato, Genoa, Monza Brianza, Rimini, Fermo, Trieste and Milan are, however, the provinces in which accidents are less serious. The mortality rate, in fact, is less than 1 death per 100 accidents.

Soft mobility: victims increase in 2023 for drivers of scooters (+31.3%) and bicycles (+8.1%), electric bicycles are decreasing (-40%), pedestrians are stable. During 2023, there are 485 pedestrians died (same figure compared to last year), 212 cyclists (+3.4%) – of which 12 on electric bikes (-40%) – and 21 scooter drivers (+31.3%). In the province of Rome, the highest number of dead pedestrians (71), followed by Milan (26) and Naples (22). In the province of Milan, the highest number of dead cyclists (11), followed by Latina (10) and Venice (8) Of the 21 deaths on scooters, 3 are concentrated in the province of Turin, 2 in both the provinces of Venice and Rome.
