Used, total vehicles: +8.4%; radiation, total vehicles +31.8%; hybrid/petrol preferred (40.6%); electric at 3.8%
Used cars are growing (+11.1), radiation is soaring (+35.8), hybrids/petrol are consumers’ favorites (40.6% market share), electrics are at 3.8%, first registrations are plummeting of methane cars (-95%), LPG (-11.5%) and diesel (-11.2%) down, no new registrations for petrol/methane. These are some of the most significant data from the latest monthly bulletin “Auto-Trend”, the statistical analysis carried out by the Automobile Club of Italy on PRA data, which can be consulted on the website www.aci.it

The second-hand market is growing. Transfers of ownership of vehicles overall – net of mini-transfers (temporary transfers in the name of the dealer pending resale to the end customer), in fact, recorded an increase of 8.4% compared to October 2023. This percentage drops to +3.7% with the same number of working days, given that, this year, October had one more working day compared to the same month in 2023. In absolute values, in the last month of October, changes in ownership – net of the distorting effect of mini-transfers – they were 310,921 for cars only and 410,576 for all vehicles (in October 2023 they were, respectively, 279,906 and 378,861). For every 100 new cars, 222 used ones were sold; 195 in the first nine months of 2024. From January to October 2024, increases of 8.8% were detected for cars, 2.1% for motorcycles and 7.4% for all vehicles.
CAR OWNERSHIP TRANSFERS: +11.1% (DAILY AVERAGE: +6.3%)
In October 2024, car ownership changes – net of mini-transfers – recorded a positive change of 11.1%, compared to October 2023. A percentage which – if we consider the daily average – drops to +6.3 %. Car transfers including mini-transfers are also growing: +9.6% (daily variation: +4.9%), with 543,265 formalities compared to 495,590 in October 2023. Positive result also for mini-transfers, +7.7% ( daily average: +3%) and 232,344 mini-passes compared to 215,684 in October 2023.
MOTORCYCLE OWNERSHIP TRANSFERS: -7.3% (DAILY AVERAGE -11.4%)
However, motorbike transfers are decreasing, net of mini-transfers, with a negative variation of 7.3% (daily variation: -11.4%): 51,326 practices compared to 55,396 in October 2023.
TOTAL RADIATION: +31.8% (DAILY AVERAGE +26.1%)
Strong increase – +31.8% – in radiation on total vehicles: 143,112 compared to 108,550 in October 2023. Considering the extra working day, this variation drops to +26.1%. Slight contraction (-0.7%) for motorcycles. In the first nine months of 2024, growth was 27.4% for cars, 6.7% for motorcycles and 25% for total vehicles.
CAR RADIATION: +35.8% (DAILY AVERAGE +26.1%) – SUBSTITUTION RATE: 0.85
Car cancellations are growing strongly: +35.8% compared to October of the previous year – 119,461 practices against 87,952 – a result evidently determined by the continuation of demolitions related to the purchase of new cars incentivized in the previous months, thanks to eco- bonuses. Considering the additional working day, this variation drops to +29.9%. In October, the unit replacement rate was 0.85 (85 were written off for every 100 new cars); in the first nine months of 2024 it was 0.77.
MOTORCYCLE RADIATION: +3.8% (DAILY AVERAGE -0.7%)
More modest increase (+3.8%) for motorcycle cancellations: 11,042 motorcycles canceled compared to 10,634 in October 2023. Considering the extra working day, this variation becomes a decrease of 0.7%.
POWER: HYBRID/PETROL 8% (+66.6%), ELECTRIC 0.9% (+44.3%)
In used vehicles, traditional fuel systems (diesel and petrol) still prevail; the share of the petrol hybrid stands at 8%, with a growth of +66.6%. Electric cars are still at 0.9% share in October (increase of 44.3%). In minipasses, diesel cars still lead (45.9% share in October 2024, however decreasing compared to October 2023, when it was 48.7%). The incidence of petrol hybrids for mini-transfers stood at 12.3% in October (+58% increase), a share which continues to exceed that of LPG cars, which remained at 6.7%. Also highlighted is the increase in mini-transfers of diesel hybrid cars, which achieved an increase of 67.2%, with a percentage of the total still equal to 2.2%. The mini-turnovers of electric cars recorded a share of 1.3% and strong growth, +53.4%.
