Christiane Benner, First Chairwoman of IG Metall, about leaving the traffic lights

“This country, the people who live and work here deserve stability, security and, above all, confidence. Clear decisions must now be made quickly about the next steps.

We cannot afford any ambiguity in the coming period. Not just literally, but in concrete terms: We cannot afford for further investments to be postponed, for employees not to know how their jobs are developing and for the infrastructure around us to collapse.

What the economy and society need now more urgently than ever are a government capable of acting, a constructive opposition and an active state: internally and externally, with a focus on political action that puts the needs of the people at the center. An active industrial and welfare state policy, that means investment and social justice, is essential. In this way, IG Metall will be involved in the developments of the next few weeks and months.

Government action means taking responsibility, even in difficult times. Unfortunately, not all partners in this coalition wanted to fulfill this. The decisions made yesterday were only consistent in this respect.”
