Three cars tested by Euro NCAP in the fifth test of 2024: Cupra Tavascan and MG HS, (electric SUVs) and the Ford Tourneo Courier diesel minivan. Maximum score, five stars, for Cupra and MG, three stars for Ford.
The Cupra Tavascan, (a brand that constitutes the alternative to SEAT offers), offers good protection to all occupants, including children. It is also equipped with a safety system on the bonnet, the active bonnet, to protect pedestrians and to ensure good reactivity for cyclists and motorcyclists. The car also has the indirect driver status monitoring system and the Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control (iACC), capable of adapting the vehicle speed to the prevailing limits and road conditions. The Cupra Tavascan scores five stars for safety.
The MG HS features good protection for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as an effective automatic emergency braking (AEB) system that responds well to a range of vulnerable road users. The car also includes protection against “dooring”, i.e. the sudden opening of a door in the path of a cyclist who is approaching from behind the vehicle. The MG HS also receives five stars.
The Ford Transit Courier van, on which the passenger car version of the Ford Tourneo Courier is based, achieved Platinum recognition from Euro NCAP in 2024, thanks to its high level of active safety technologies. However, in a frontal impact against a full-width rigid barrier with this model, head protection was rated insufficient for women. The Ford, therefore, stops at three stars, but the Blue Oval house has already ensured that the vehicle will be subject to rectification, and the updated 2025 version will be re-evaluated.
“It might seem that Euro NCAP is making the job of manufacturers difficult, yet we work closely with the industry, encouraging changes in car design which, after all, save lives,” said Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP. We update our protocols to be more stringent, adapting them to new guidelines on safety technologies and considering vulnerable road users. The Euro NCAP protocols for 2026 are now available for industry review, and highlight future safety innovations that need to be added to our testing programme.”
The Ford Capri, a partner model for the Ford Explorer, assessed by Euro NCAP in September 2024, receives five stars.
The Mitsubishi ASX, identical to the Renault Captur, tested by Euro NCAP in September 2024, receives four stars.
The electric variant (BEV) of the CHERY OMODA5, tested in 2022, also receives five stars.
The hybrid variant (PHEV) of the Renault Rafale, twin of the Australe tested in 2022, receives five stars.
