The ACI-ISTAT estimates relating to the first six months of 2024 highlight – compared to the same period of 2023 – a slight increase (+0.9%) in the number of road accidents with injuries to people (80,057, compared to 79,317 in the first half of 2023 ) and injured (+0.5%: 107,643 compared to 107,060), and a more significant increase (+4.0%) in victims by the thirtieth day: 1,429, compared to 1,374 in the first half of 2023.
On average, in the first six months of 2023, 440 accidents occurred every day, resulting in 7.9 deaths and 591 injuries.
In comparison with the first six months of 2019 – reference year for the 2030 objective, set by the European Commission with the “Road safety policy framework 2021-2030” program (50% reduction in the number of victims and serious injuries by 2030 ) – accidents (-4.3%), deaths (-6.8%) and injuries (-8.0%) are decreasing, even if the increase in deaths recorded in the first six months of 2024 takes Italy further away from the objectives set at European level.
In comparison with the first half of 2023, victims decreased on motorways (-13.9%) but increased on urban (+7.9%) and extra-urban roads (+1.0%).
Compared to the first six months of 2019, however, victims recorded a significant decrease on motorways (-31.9%) and a more limited decrease on extra-urban roads (-4.2%). On urban roads, however, an increase of 1.1% is estimated.
As regards motorway travel, the cumulative data for the first four months of 2024 records a growth of 3.1% in vehicles/km traveled on the network, compared to the same time period last year. This result is mainly attributable to the increase in the mileage of heavy vehicles, whose growth compared to 2023 was 4%. However, volumes for light vehicles also recorded an increase of 2.7%.
As regards traffic on the main extra-urban network, slightly increasing values were recorded for light and heavy vehicles in the first half of 2024 (+1.4%). On average, traffic increased by approximately 1% for light vehicles and 1.9% for heavy vehicles.
