ACI: used on the rise also in November with a strong monthly increase in radiation
06.12.2024
A plus sign also in November for the Italian used car market. Changes in ownership of cars net of minitransfers (temporary transfers in the name of the dealer awaiting resale to the end customer) recorded an increase of 1.4% compared to November 2023, which rises to 6.5 % in terms of daily average, considering the presence of one less working day. For every 100 new cars, 222 second-hand cars were sold in November and 197 in the first eleven months of the year. The used market therefore continues to outperform the new market, with a ratio that is increasingly consolidated over the course of 2024 of two used cars sold for each first-registered car.
As far as fuel systems are concerned, on the second-hand market in November it is always the traditional diesel and petrol engines that maintain the top positions. The share of petrol hybrid cars, however, recorded a monthly increase of 48.1%, gaining a share of 8.2%, while the share of electric cars, although growing by 38.7%, still stands below the ‘1% (0.9%). In mini-transfers, however, the clear primacy of diesel cars is confirmed (44.3% share in November 2024, down 8.8% compared to the same month in 2023). Otherwise, the incidence of petrol hybrids increases (+30.8% and a monthly share of 12.5%) together with that of diesel hybrids (+42%) and electric ones (+44.2%), which however reach rather marginal market shares (2.6% for diesel hybrids and 1.2% for electric ones respectively)
November’s monthly balance sheet in the red, on the contrary, for the transfers of ownership of motorcycles which, again net of mini-transfers, recorded a decrease of 4.4% compared to the same month of 2023, given that in terms of daily average however, it shows an increase of 0.4%.
In the first eleven months of 2024 compared to the same period of 2023, net transfers of ownership recorded increases of 8.1% for cars, 1.6% for motorcycles and 6.8% for all vehicles.
The data is reported in the latest monthly bulletin “Auto-Trend”, the statistical analysis carried out by the Automobile Club of Italy on PRA data, which can be consulted on the website www.aci.it.
The eco-bonus effect on the scrapping of older cars continues in November. Four-wheeler radiation recorded a significant growth of 20% compared to November 2023, with a daily variation rising to 26%. A positive result which does not stop the growth of the Italian fleet in circulation: the monthly unit replacement rate actually stops at 0.84 (for every 100 new cars 84 were written off), standing overall at 0.78 in the first eleven months of the year.
Motorcycle radiation is in positive territory, albeit slightly, with a monthly increase of 0.1% compared to November 2023, but a variation in terms of daily average of 5.1%.
In the first eleven months of 2024 compared to the same period of 2023, radiation increased by 26.7% for cars, 6.1% for motorcycles and 24.3% for all vehicles.
