Prominent Charleston Physician W. Melvin Brown, III, MD, Opens MDVIP-Affiliated Primary Care Practice on Upper Peninsula

CHARLESTON, S.C. and BOCA RATON, Fla., Feb. 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — MDVIP, the market leader in membership-based healthcare with a network of over 1,300 primary care physicians nationwide, today announced that decorated former U.S. Navy doctor and Charleston native W. Melvin Brown III, MD, has opened an MDVIP-affiliated internal medicine practice located at 677 King Street, Suite 510, on Charleston’s Upper Peninsula. Dr. Brown, a board-certified physician with over 22 years of experience in emergency medicine, preventive care and travel medicine, is accepting new patients who seek more time and a closer relationship with their primary care doctor.

Dr. Brown, who returned to Charleston in 2015 after 20 years of active duty with the U.S. Navy, earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), where he currently serves as vice-chairman of the board of trustees. He also sits on the board of directors of First Capital Bank and the South Carolina Aquarium. He devotes time to treating veterans as part-time staff at the Ralph H. Johnson Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Charleston.

As an MDVIP-affiliated physician, Dr. Brown maintains a smaller practice, allowing him to spend more time with each patient so that together they can focus on disease prevention and early detection, and better manage chronic conditions. Dr. Brown’s practice offers other conveniences, including same- or next-day appointments, extended visits that prioritize each patient’s well-being and 24/7 physician availability.

“I believe a proactive approach to healthcare is essential to building a healthier community. Since retiring from naval service, I’ve witnessed the traditional medical system fall short in this regard,” said Dr. Brown, who served with distinction on multiple deployments including in Afghanistan, Japan and onboard navy vessels. “Affiliating with MDVIP was a natural step in my transition to private practice, as it allows me to partner with patients on finding and achieving their definition of optimal health. By emphasizing education and lifestyle modification, I aim to help individuals – without always having to resort to the prescription pad – so that they can live each day with more strength and confidence.”

Personalized Care
For an annual membership fee, patients receive the MDVIP Wellness Program, a comprehensive yearly health assessment that includes advanced diagnostic tests and screenings to give a more complete view of the patient’s overall health. Using the results, physicians provide ongoing coaching and tools to help patients make healthier lifestyle choices, prevent disease and achieve their wellness goals.

Other benefits include the MDVIP Connect app and website, which allow patients to communicate with their doctor online, access personal health records and obtain meal plans, workout programs and other healthcare resources. Should an emergent need arise while a patient is traveling, physicians can help arrange care with a local hospital, pharmacy or doctor, which may include another MDVIP affiliate.

Proven Health Outcomes
Eleven peer-reviewed, published studies show that patients in MDVIP-affiliated practices have better health outcomes compared to those in traditional primary care practices, including:

  • 79% fewer hospitalizations for Medicare patients, equating to $600 million savings in one year
  • 72% fewer hospitalizations for commercially insured patients
  • 40% more patients identified at risk for cardiovascular disease using advanced testing
