“The steel industry is the basis for a strong industry and a resilient, independent Europe. Nevertheless, the industry has been under massive pressure for years. Both recognize the EU Commission with the steel action plan and shows ways out of the crisis. However, the plan remains vague. The action plan now needs a quick concretization and a rapid implementation.
High energy prices are the most pressing problem for the European steel industry. This is recognized, but there are no quick, concrete measures that lead to a competitive electricity price. The action plan is also behind our expectations when it comes to the construction of green lead markets and the high run of the hydrogen economy.
We expressly welcome the announced reform of the border compensation mechanism CBAM and the planned succession plan for the protective measures “Safeguards”. For both, IG Metall has been campaigning for a long time. If these instruments are now effectively adapted to the current developments and known loopholes are closed, they can contribute decisively to stabilize the steel industry in Europe and to secure jobs. ”
