@Toyota: Commencement of Design and Verification of Hydrogen Supply Infrastructure with a View to Commercialization in the Port of Nagoya

2025-05-27

Toyota Tsusho Corporation (“Toyota Tsusho”), Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation (“Taiyo Nippon Sanso”), and Toho Gas Co., Ltd. (“Toho Gas”) announced that the project entitled “Design and Verification of Hydrogen Supply Infrastructure With a View to Commercialization at and in the area around the Port of Nagoya” (the Project) has been selected by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) for its “Development of Technologies to realizing a Hydrogen Society/Regional Hydrogen Utilization Technology Development.” Accordingly, the three companies will begin this project in June 2025.

Background

In 2022, Toyota Tsusho, Toho Gas and other companies were selected to participate in the Feasibility Study titled “Development of a Hydrogen Utilization Model at and in the Area Around the Port of Nagoya”. The companies conducted research and studies on the possibility of utilizing hydrogen for cargo handling equipment and logistics vehicles at and in the area around the port, methods of producing and supplying hydrogen, and the requirements for establishing a business. As a result, it was confirmed that there is a hydrogen potential of up to 1,500 tons per year for cargo handling and logistics around the Port of Nagoya container terminal. However, it became clear that cost and operational issues need to be addressed in order to realize hydrogen utilization on a commercial basis.

Content of the Project

The project will proceed in FY2025 with technical and business verification to develop a low-cost hydrogen supply infrastructure suitable for logistics vehicles and non-self-propelled cargo handling equipment such as large cranes in ports, while ensuring that the infrastructure complies with Japan’s safety standards.
