Rivian on the Road
When dreaming up our ideal mobile experience, an Airstream trailer was always part of the vision. Its history is rooted in adventure and exploration, embodying the nostalgia of the American road trip. We partnered with Mountain Modern Airstream to restore a 1963 Airstream Overlander, specifically because we loved its clean and minimal design for that era.The goal for our fully-electric upfit was to celebrate the era in which the Airstream was originally built and modernize the experience to best tell Rivian’s story. Through a careful restoration, we preserved much of the exterior, keeping the original end caps and relocating the door within a door and Jalousie windows. The most significant exterior modification we made was incorporating a gull wing to open up the space. We gutted the interior to create a fresh canvas, adding new lighting, flooring, millwork and upholstery. Consistent with our design language, we kept the design approachable and adaptable and added circular design elements like pillows filled with recycled textile fibers and bolsters infilled with offcuts from our vehicles. The flooring is crafted with Nike Grind, a material derived from post-consumer recycled athletic footwear. The Rivian palette comes to life through linoleum surfaces and wood details with cork and paperstone accents. Little hand-painted flourishes like a sign that reads “caution: this land yacht stops for all sunsets” celebrate the joy of traveling. We also incorporated ways for visitors to get hands-on with the products through physical swatches of vehicle materials and finishes—helping them envision their dream vehicle configurations.
