Dr. David Jeremiah Issues Statement on Devastating Floods in Texas
SAN DIEGO, July 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Almost a week after the devastating flash floods hit Texas on Independence Day, there are more than a hundred lost individuals and more than 150 still missing. As we learn more about the lives lost and the heroics of those amid the storm, our hearts break. Every natural disaster is upsetting and pulls at our heartstrings, but when children are at the center of the stories, it takes on a different tone.
Unless we have experienced a similar loss, we cannot begin to fathom what the families, friends, and communities in Texas are feeling, but we can sympathize, support, and pray with and for them during the days and weeks to come.
As a pastor, one of the hardest things is to comfort a parent who has lost their child. In this moment, I want to share a special message to all those mourning the loss of children from this flood –
The death of a child is one of the world’s greatest sorrows, and the pain is intense, but in that pain, I praise the Lord because, through the tears, there’s a sunbeam of hope. Scripture gives us reasons to trust that children are not lost forever. Instead, they are given the gift of bypassing the sorrows of this world and are instantly transported to heaven, where we’ll meet them and enjoy their fellowship throughout eternity.
In the Gospels, when Jesus is asked to raise a synagogue leader’s young daughter from the dead, He responds, “She is not dead, but sleeping.” These words are not just spoken to the girl’s family but to every mom or dad or grandparent who has ever lost a little one. You will see them again.
Our few moments on earth are nothing compared to our eternal fellowship with those we love on the new earth. The Lord knew this flood was coming. His presence was with every child and believer in its midst, and His presence is with you now and in the difficult days that lie ahead.
As the news continues to unfold on this tragedy and clean up eventually begins, may we as a nation take a moment to pray for all those impacted –
Heavenly Father,
Before Your ascension, You told us, “Surely I am with you always,” so I pray that the knowledge of Your presence would be known and felt by all those experiencing grief and loss across Texas.
May Your Spirit prevail and may the sorrows of today be turned into joy and peace in the future as Your comfort surrounds the broken-hearted.
We know that many children are now in Your loving arms. While the pain this side of heaven is indescribable, we know that You love these children and called them, saying, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”
As King David found hope, comfort, and cheer in the assurance that his baby had gone to heaven and they would be reunited one day, may those same feelings envelop all those who have lost a loved one.
May we, as neighbors, not only lift our brothers and sisters up in prayer, but may we also be Your hands and feet to so many in need in the days ahead.
I ask that You keep this region in your loving care. Provide wisdom to the leaders of the state, cities, counties, and organizations leading the recovery efforts.
And as the days pass, may our sorrow turn to joy as we point our hearts and minds upward to heaven and ponder the coming reunions.
We pray this in Jesus’ name,
Amen.
