Monkey Wrench Films to Release Global Digital Premiere of “Pay Dirt: The Story of Supercross” on July 18
Narrated by Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame, Netflix’s Brothers, From Under the Truck), Pay Dirt is the latest documentary from multi-Emmy Award-winning director Paul Taublieb (The Vow, Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau, Ground Swell). The film traces the high-octane origins of Supercross from its birth in 1972 to its current status as one of the most intense, yet underappreciated, motorsports on the planet.
The story begins with the sport’s controversial founder, Michael Goodwin, now serving a double life sentence for the murder of his former business partner, racing legend Mickey Thompson, and Thompson’s wife. Through stunning cinematic visuals, exclusive interviews, and never-before-seen archival footage, Pay Dirt dives deep into the dramatic evolution of Supercross — highlighting both its triumphs and tragedies.
“This movie is not preachy at all. It’s not telling you how to feel. It just is what it is — and I think people really respond to honesty,” added Josh Brolin, discussing the film’s emotional depth and unique voice.
The film features interviews with the sport’s most iconic figures, including Hall of Famers Jeremy McGrath, Bob Hannah, Ricky Johnson, and Ricky Carmichael, as well as modern champions and cultural insiders. Also spotlighted is Jimmy Button, a former star racer whose own near-fatal injury led him to found Road 2 Recovery, the film’s official charitable partner.
“This movie educates you on the sport of Supercross, from its roots to the glamour and the dark side in a way that captivates your senses in every way. New and old fans alike will undoubtedly learn something new watching it for the first time,” said Jimmy Button, President of Road 2 Recovery.
Produced by Taublieb Films and backed by Monster Energy, Feld Motor Sports, and the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship, Pay Dirt has already received acclaim from critics and racing fans alike, cementing itself as a must-watch for summer 2025.
The digital release follows a successful global theatrical run that included over 50 cities across North America, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.
