Clean Technica: Urander Enclosed Bed Cap Kit for the Cybertruck — CleanTechnica Tested004137

The Cybertruck is one of the most capable electric vehicles ever built, and customers and companies alike were eager to develop a range of products that helped it to achieve its full potential.
Patrick and his team at Urander were some of the first to develop a bed rack kit for the wedge-shaped Cybertruck and it’s angular body lines. Their kit came with side panels that mounted to the Cybertruck’s factory rack mount points with crossbars up top to add rigidity and provide a flat surface for mounting all sorts of adventure gear.

It was with some of the earliest builds of these Urander kits that Rafael aka TesLatino and Justin aka Bearded Tesla tackled the Arctic in a pair of Cybertrucks on what they called the Arctic Cybertrek. Building on their success, Urander began developing an enclosed bed cap kit which takes their molle panel rack sides and uses them as the foundation for an enclosed system that adds storage compartments to the walls. Perhaps more exciting than the prospect of clean gear and more places to store it is the upcoming tent from Urander that will allow customers to stand up in the bed of the truck and when it’s time to sleep pull down a bed platform from overhead.
Urander generously brought a kit over to me and we installed it on my Cybertruck together. The timing was perfect, as I was heading up to Canada for some off-roading followed by a week of camping back down through Washington and Oregon on the way to the X takeover in San Mateo, California.

Assembly
We opened up the kit and started the assembly. This was the first fully assembled kit Urander had built, and while it was a pre-production build, it was representative of what they delivered to the first customers in late July.
We started off by mounting the three side panels to the Cybertruck. This required small mounts to be attached to the Cybertruck’s 4 factory rack mount points on either side of the vehicle. We installed a small strip of foam to help with waterproofing on top of the Cybertruck rail and continued bolting the three side panels to the truck.

A few more bolts secured the side panels to each other, after which we continued by mounting the rear door of the cab. This served as the back corner frame of the bed cap system and it was impressive to see the air struts and polycarbonate glass work together to transform the look of the Cybertruck into an almost camp ready, enclosed bed cap.
After getting the rear door bolted on, we proceeded to mount the roof panels to the underside of the rack rails for the system. This process was challenging, as each panel had to be held up to the rack while it was bolted on from the underside. As we moved along, we changed tactics and used some of Urander’s z-mounts to secure the panels from the top, which was much faster and much easier to install. Urander will likely be using these as the primary mounting method moving forward to make it easier for customers and to reduce install times.

Up at the front of the rack, an integrated wind deflector helps guide oncoming air up over the rack system and allows for mounting one of Urander’s optional 48-volt, 50-inch light bars. Their light bar comes with a two-wire, quick-disconnect wiring harness that can be directly attached to the Tesla 48-volt lighting wiring harness that lives in the factory rack mounting point above the front passenger door.
Heads Up: the new long-range Cybertruck and some of the newer all-wheel drive Cybertrucks are only shipping with the rear two sets of factory roof rack mount points but Tesla does sell replacement roof appliques that allow customers to use the front two mount points as well. Check with your local Tesla service center to see how your Cybertruck is configured before ordering any roof rack system.
Using the Urander Enclosed Bed Cap Kit
One of the key features of Urander’s new bed cap kit is an integrated storage system that transforms the two rear side walls into storage compartments that can be accessed from outside and inside the bed of the vehicle. The version we reviewed has tinted polycarbonate windows with dual locks on the two doors on either side, but Patrick shared that they will be available in a solid metal version as well if you don’t want anybody looking into the bed of the truck.
Inside the bed of the truck, twist knobs secure the inner doors, which are made of lightweight aluminum molle panels, making it easy to attach gear to them from either side. Pairing this with a brand new set of straps I purchased from Rollercam made this easy to accomplish. In preparation for our 2-week adventure, I loaded the Cybertruck up with my usual mix of recovery gear, spare tire, compressor, and camping equipment. I was pleasantly surprised at how many new options I had to mount and access my gear.

As a modular system, the waterproof and dustproof nature of the bed cap system relies heavily on the installer. Each seam between the side rails and the vehicle, the side panels, the rear door, the front wind fairing, and the roof panels must be sealed with a waterproof material to ensure water resistance of the overall system.
The design is such that all of the doors have their own seals against the bed cap with the exception of the rear door. The rear door seals directly onto the tailgate of the vehicle and the sides press up against the frame of the door. In my rush to get out the door, I missed some of the weatherstripping and ended up doing a few weather sealing sessions throughout the trip to seal it up.
I highly recommend taking your time with the installation to ensure every single exterior seam is well sealed. It will make your experience with the kit much more pleasant. The kit came with a copious amount of weatherstripping and foam seam sealers and they are there for a reason.
We took the Urander Enclosed Bed Cap Kit up to British Columbia and Northern California for a shakedown trip and ripped down some of the dustiest trails you’ll find. With the exception of the rear door in our bed cap system, nearly all of the dust and water we encountered was kept out of the cab. After sealing that up with some of the weatherstripping from the kit, it was even better.

Up at the front of the system, a wind fairing mounts between the rack and the front of the vehicle, and this is another key area of waterproofing for the system. Urander includes a rubber seal where the wind fairing touches the vehicle, and it’s important to spend extra care here, as driving the vehicle tends to force air and dust in through these cracks with extra vigor.
With the Enclosed Bed Cap Kit in place, the bed of the vehicle is transformed from the dusty mess I experienced on my recent week-long trip to Southern Utah where the bed acted as a catch point for dust on every single trail we explored. On the trip up to British Columbia and back, I was able to not only store gear back there without having to worry about it being covered in dust, but also slept back there at night.

It was especially nice to have all of the additional storage in the form of the molle racks that serve as the inner wall of the side panels. Much like the outer doors, these inner molle panel doors allow you to access the gear you’re storing in the side panels, as well as allowing you to mount additional items directly to the molle racks.
This is an absolute game changer in terms of gear, storage, and organization when overlanding or even in your day-to-day life. Many overlanders pride themselves on how much gear they can strap to the outside of the vehicle, with little regard to fuel efficiency. In an electric vehicle, it’s impossible to ignore the penalty that comes from aerodynamic drag by strapping extra gear to the outside of your vehicle, so adding an enclosed space that doesn’t cause too much additional drag is huge.

Urander’s solution to add molle panels to the inside of the rack allows you the same organizational freedoms as exterior molle panels, but without the range hit. With this configuration, I was able to store my spare tire in an upright position strapped against the front side corner of the bed-mounting traction boards, shovels, and other essential gear to the inner molle panels.
Overall
The aluminum Urander Enclosed Bed Cap Kit system sets a new high bar for overlanding gear for the Cybertruck. It elevates the experience and makes it easy to not only camp in the Cybertruck but to do so in luxury. The ability to store gear in the side walls of the vehicle and to do so with such elegance thanks to their integrated molle rack is unparalleled.

The installation of Urander’s new kit is critical, and when done right it transforms how you can use the Cybertruck. Looking towards the future with their new integrated rooftop tent system, Urander has really set itself apart with a line of products that is both functional and attractive.
