NIO Is Going Global — And This Time, It’s Heading to Singapore, Costa Rica, and Uzbekistan

NIO’s global ambitions just kicked into a higher gear.

The Chinese electric vehicle company is officially expanding to Singapore, Costa Rica, and Uzbekistan over the next two years with the help of some local heavyweights in each region. For NIO, this is more than just stamping flags on a map; it’s a carefully coordinated move that hits three big milestones: its first right-hand drive model, its entry into the Americas, and a foothold in Central Asia.

In Singapore, NIO is linking up with Wearnes Automotive, a veteran luxury car dealer that’s been around since 1906. Together, they’ll launch firefly, NIO’s small, high-end EV and its first vehicle designed for right-hand drive markets. That’s a major step for NIO, and a smart way to ease into Southeast Asia.

In Costa Rica, NIO’s headed in with Horizontes Cielo Azul Movilidad, the country’s biggest EV distributor. This marks NIO’s debut in the Americas, and it’s coming in with a full squad: the EL8, EL6, ET5 Touring, ONVO L60, and firefly. For a relatively small country, Costa Rica punches above its weight in EV adoption so this isn’t just a test market, it’s a springboard.

Then there’s Uzbekistan, where NIO is partnering with Abu Sahiy Motors a local giant in logistics, real estate, and automotive. With strong roots and a broad reach, it’s a good match for NIO’s first move into Central Asia. Expect the usual suspects here too: the EL8, EL6, ET5, and ONVO L60.

We’re not just picking places on a globe, said Chris Chen, NIO’s head of global business development. We’re choosing partners who know the terrain, speak the language, and share our values. That means shared standards, user-first thinking, and an approach that’s about more than just moving units.

What’s clear is that NIO’s not coming alone. It’s bringing all three of its brands to the table:

  • NIO, the high-end flagship line

  • ONVO, built for modern families

  • firefly, the sleek city-sized option

Each one serves a different buyer and that’s by design. Instead of forcing one product into every market, NIO is playing a multi-brand game. And so far, it’s working.

As of July 2025, NIO has delivered over 800,000 vehicles globally. It has R&D centers and factories scattered across 10 countries, and it’s sitting on a mountain of innovation: over 9,900 patents filed and counting. The company has even built out its own proprietary NIO Full Stack a set of 12 core technology areas ranging from autonomous driving to battery systems.

And while this expansion might feel fast, it’s been coming. NIO has spent most of 2025 lining up new partnerships to deepen its presence around the globe. Now, with Singapore, Costa Rica, and Uzbekistan in the mix, it’s clear the company isn’t content with staying in China or Europe it’s going all-in on global.

Our mission has always been about more than EVs, Chen added. It’s about pushing toward a cleaner, smarter future. That means meeting people where they are with the right products and the right partners.
