Reduce total amount of greenhouse gas emissions from Scope 1 to 3 by more than 25% over 5 years
TOKYO, Aug. 29, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Sony Group Corporation (hereinafter “Sony”) has set its “Green Management 2030” (hereinafter “GM2030”) medium-term environmental targets that will take effect from fiscal (hereinafter “FY”) 2026 through 2030. Sony’s “Road to Zero” long-term environmental plan is to achieve a “zero environmental footprint” by FY2050*1 throughout all stages of its product lifecycles and business activities from four perspectives: climate change, resources, chemical substances, and biodiversity. To achieve this, it sets medium-term environmental targets every five years to serve as milestones. Targets are determined by “back-casting” (calculating backwards) from the final goal.
As of the end of FY2024, Sony expects to achieve most of the targets set forth in its previous plan, “Green Management 2025” (hereinafter “GM2025”), which covers the five-year period up to and including FY2025. For GM2030, Sony has included new indexes as the key performance indicators based on issues identified in the course of GM2025, while also taking into account the current environmental situation. The new GM2030 indexes include targets for reducing total amount of greenhouse gas emissions from Scope 1 to 3 by more than 25% over 5 years and accelerating activities that bring about resource circulation.
Major focus points and targets of Sony Group’s “Green Management 2030”
1. Reduce total amount of greenhouse gas emissions from Scope 1 to 3 by more than 25% over 5 years
- As climate change risk becomes an increasingly serious and pressing issue, Sony aims to achieve net zero throughout the value chain, including Scopes 1 to 3, by FY2040, 10 years earlier than the other three perspectives. To achieve this goal, we implement the following measures to reduce total amount of greenhouse gas emissions by more than 25% over 5 years by FY2030.
- Reduce Group-wide scope 1 and 2 emissions by 60% compared to FY2025 and remove the amount of carbon equal to the residual emissions.
- Reduce Group-wide scope 3 emissions by 25% compared to FY2025.
- Achieve 100% renewable electricity used in our own operations.
- Encourage major raw material and component suppliers to use 100% renewable electricity when manufacturing products for the Sony Group.
2. Accelerate activities that bring about resource circulation, such as reducing the use of non-recyclable plastics
- In order to reduce the use of non-renewable resources, Sony promotes the appropriate use of resources by expanding the use of recycled materials in its products, and also by improving the recyclability of materials used in its products.
- Achieve a non-circular plastic*2 use rate per product weight of 30% or less.
- Use 100% recycled materials for tin in solder for mounting of major printed circuit boards in specific models.
- Use 100% recycled materials for gold in major printed circuit boards and other components in specific models.
- Promote implementation of measures to ensure the appropriate use of resources, including enabling products to be used for a longer time and fostering reuse of products/components.
3. Strengthen initiatives to address plastic packaging materials as a countermeasure to plastic pollution
- Sony is further strengthening its efforts to address plastic packaging, which is one of the major causes of plastic pollution.
- Achieve a plastic use rate in product packaging of 10% or less.
- Eliminate plastic packaging for products weighing 5kg or less.
- Eliminate plastic packaging used at Sony Group retail stores.
Additionally, Sony is conducting awareness-raising activities related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including those related to the environment, by utilizing its entertainment content and IP, and collaborating with artists. Similarly, under GM2030, Sony will conduct environmental awareness and engagement activities unique to each of its business.
Regarding its efforts to introduce renewable energy, Sony has joined the RE100*3 international initiative aiming for 100% renewable energy use, and itself is working toward sourcing 100% renewable electricity for the worldwide operations of the Sony Group by 2030. Furthermore, Sony has received approval for its net-zero targets from the “Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).” *4
Sony also continues to enhance its disclosure of climate change-related information, such as by endorsing the final report published by the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD Recommendations*5).
Sony will continue striving to reduce its environmental footprint throughout its supply chain and bring forth environmentally conscious products and services, with the aim of achieving its GM2030 targets and realizing an environmental footprint of zero by FY2050 across the entire Group. It will continue to engage in business activities that aim to bring about a sustainable society and global environment.
*1: Sony has accelerated its goal of achieving net-zero throughout the entire value chain, including scopes 1 to 3, by ten years from FY2050 to FY2040, and its target for achieving 100% renewable energy in its own operations also by ten years, from FY2040 to FY2030.
*2: Plastics other than recycled or renewable plastics.
*3: A global initiative whose members seek to supply the electricity for their business activities using 100% renewable energy, which Sony joined in 2018.
*4: An international initiative to encourage companies to set science-based greenhouse gas reduction targets in order to limit the increase in the average global temperature due to climate change to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
*5: A task force established by the Financial Stability Board (FSB) in 2015, the TCFD Recommendations are a framework for the voluntary disclosure by companies of information such as climate-related risks and opportunities.
