Christiane Benner, first chairman of IG Metall, to the auto-summit: “The car and supplier industry has broken down massively in the past twelve months, an end is not in sight. That is why it is a real and necessary signal from Chancellor Merz to get everyone involved to a table to find ways out of the crisis together.
For us it is clear: At the center of all efforts, the safety and future viability of the jobs must be. The uncertainty among employees is great. The initiative of Federal Chancellor Merz is the chance to send the employees the clear sign that companies and politics are now stabilizing the auto industry with a specific plan and leading them to the future.
To do this, the companies must finally end the unspeakable relocation debate. I appeal to the employers to reflect on the strengths and to develop the auto industry forward with us. ”
Jürgen Kerner, second chairman of IG Metall, to the steel summit: “Chancellor Merz once again unmistakably known himself to the steel location in Germany yesterday. This is good news for the employees in the steel industry, which are massively unsettled due to the difficult situation.
We are grateful to the Chancellor that he took up our impulse and invites you to a steel summit. It is important that there are concrete appointments: In order to protect the steel workstations in Germany from dumping steel from China and Russia, effective customs regulations at EU level are needed immediately. The steel industry will die without this protection. A competitive industrial flow price is also required, namely January 1, 2026.
The problems are analyzed, the solutions are described. The steel summit must be a summit of the specific results. The companies have to take responsibility and contribute their part. In any case, there are no solutions. We ask the employers to work with us together at sustainable future prospects and to keep jobs. ”
