National Sleep Foundation Releases Position on Tech Innovations and Sleep Health

Calls for adoption of frameworks for development and use of consumer sleep products

WASHINGTON, Sept. 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — National Sleep Foundation (NSF), the leading source on sleep health, today released its first comprehensive position statement on consumer sleep products and services. NSF believes the appropriate use of science-backed technologies for sleep may improve public health and help anyone and everyone be their Best Slept Self®.

“As the public’s most established source for sleep health information, we’re dedicated to informing everyday people, industry, and the market about the most beneficial uses of emerging consumer sleep technologies,” said John Lopos, CEO of the National Sleep Foundation. “These solutions should serve the public interest, maintain trust and confidence, and reflect high standards for scientific rigor and public benefit.”

NSF has been at the forefront of consumer sleep technology for the past 10 years, including providing education in the interest of the public and industry. The statement reinforces NSF’s unique authority in this space, built on decades of leadership in population sleep health research, including the annual Sleep in America® Poll, collaboration with the Consumer Technology Association® on consumer sleep product standards, and ongoing advocacy work like its SleepTech® Network and SleepTech® Award.

“Consumer sleep products are not just the next big thing, but a specific market with opportunities and challenges. The market is flooded with devices making bold claims about their products and health benefits, but very few have the scientific validation to back them up. Working with NSF and utilizing their SleepTech guidance and standards has helped us continue to innovate our products for the public” said Tobias Kirchoff, Variowell CEO, and member of NSF’s Consumer SleepTech Working Group.

NSF’s SleepTech Position Statement can be found on the NSF website.
