ResumeTemplates.com’s Survey Finds: ChatGPT Users Can No Longer Write Emails or Make Decisions Without It

New survey reveals growing skill atrophy among AI users

SEATTLE, Sept. 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — A new ResumeTemplates.com survey of 1,000 full-time U.S. workers who use AI chatbots weekly reveals that many are becoming increasingly dependent on AI to complete even basic tasks. Nearly three-quarters (73%) say they’re reliant on AI, and 1 in 4 struggle to write emails without it.

AI dependence goes beyond efficiency
While AI improves speed and accuracy, many users say their skills are weakening without it:

  • 49% say writing professional documents is harder without AI
  • 46% find it more difficult to fact-check or critically evaluate information
  • 25% struggle to write basic emails
  • 21% say making decisions has become harder

“AI can be a powerful support tool, but leaning on it too heavily risks diminishing your skills and confidence,” says Julia Toothacre, Chief Career Strategist at ResumeTemplates.com.

Younger generations report higher reliance
78% of Gen Z and 75% of Millennials say they feel dependent on AI, compared to 67% of Gen X and 59% of Boomers. Among those who feel reliant, 26% want to scale back their usage.

Users admit they struggle without AI
Respondents shared candid thoughts about their growing dependence:

  • “Thinking for myself has become impossible.”
  • “I can’t write a document I’m satisfied with without AI.”
  • “AI has reduced my critical thinking skills.”

This survey was conducted in August 2025 via Pollfish among 1,000 full-time U.S. adult workers who use AI chatbots weekly.
