In August, President Trump declared a crime emergency in the District of Columbia and took control of the Metropolitan Police Department. Since then, thousands of National Guard members and federal officers have been part of the White House’s crackdown on crime.

With the 30-day “public safety emergency” having come to an end, more than a dozen pieces of legislation related to crime fighting in DC have been proposed. Washington, D.C. has limited autonomy through the Home Rule Act passed in 1973 but Congress reviews all legislation passed by the Council of the District of Columbia before it can become law and retains authority over the District’s budget.

The National Press Club is located on the 13th Floor of the National Press Building at 529 14th St., NW, Washington, D.C.
