Christiane Benner, First Chairwoman of IG Metall on today’s auto dialogue in the Chancellery:
“Today we reached a common understanding and made agreements. It was important that politicians listened, especially to the works councils, who made their concerns about local employment very clear.
This summit sends a clear message: We want and need a strong, innovative and competitive automotive industry in Germany that secures and creates good jobs – and has a ripple effect far beyond the industry itself. Politicians will now go on the offensive:
The program announced in the coalition agreement for a faster switch to climate-friendly mobility is gaining momentum: households with small and medium incomes are to be specifically supported when purchasing e-cars. And in addition to the European funds, the federal government is adding another three billion euros by 2029. This is good news – for consumers and for employees. However, it is important that this is now quickly clarified and comes into effect quickly so that we do not experience a new wait and see among buyers.
There is also agreement that the regulatory framework for emission-free driving needs targeted adjustments in certain areas, without losing sight of the goal of climate neutrality. The federal government must campaign for this in Brussels.
We also need independence when it comes to batteries and raw materials, faster expansion of the charging infrastructure and affordable charging current. The federal government must take the necessary steps quickly.
Now it’s about implementing these agreements quickly. Time is running out. It must be clear: If companies are now given new scope and support, then they must also take responsibility for the location. Dismantling production in Germany and building future products in low-wage locations must end. There were not enough clear statements from employers on this point today. We will not let up here and will enter into conflict if necessary.”
