Unemployment benefits: “Cuts will only push people’s benefits more quickly”

“The proposal is completely wrong! Cuts to the welfare state are extremely irresponsible right now.

Older people are unemployed not because of a lack of motivation, but because of a lack of opportunities. Studies show that older unemployed people find it much more difficult to find work again. Even in times of skilled labor shortages, age discrimination in the labor market is a constant experience. Here, employers in particular need to change their attitude towards older skilled workers. Anyone who reduces the receipt of unemployment benefits only pushes older people into citizen’s benefits more quickly. This means that their chances on the job market are decreasing rather than increasing.

Anyone who has become unemployed needs support with further training, reorientation and job hunting instead of benefit cuts. Instead of putting more pressure on the unemployed, employers should do their homework: offer good work in Germany instead of relocating to low-wage areas, closing locations and reducing their qualification offerings.”
